March Music Question

Post by bearphonium »

I am in a position to do some march selection for our adult, grade 3 level marching band. My questions are:
Is there a patriotic march suitable for a concert situation where we'd combine with a small high school band? Is there some sort of medly that honors police/firefighters or other traditional patriotic music? What marches are there that are decent to march to in a parade? (We already play Washington Post March).

Thanks in advance to the TNFJ (TM)

I just did a medley arrangment of the armed forces songs that would work very well for this situation. "Marches of the Armed Forces" I'll check on the publisher and such when I get back to the school on Tuesday (have Monday off :D ). Not difficult at all, but I thought it was scored very well and it holds a nice steady tempo throughout the entire piece. One of the other schools in the area marched with it for the local Veteran's Day parade this past November as well.

There is a march medley that I have played called "Main Street America" that highlights some famous marches. I believe there are some armed forces marches within the medley as well as the stars and stripes. It is a real crowd pleaser and a lot of fun to play. Hope this helps.

Not usually thought of as a march, but Battle Hymn of the Republic
Is there some sort of medly that honors police/firefighters
America's Bravest; America's Finest, (Lewis J. Buckley/Cimarron Music) - Dedicated to the Firefighters and Police of 9/11/01
or other traditional patriotic music?
American Patrol (Frank Meacham) - medley of American Patrol, Columbia the Gem of the Ocean, Dixie, Yankee Doodle

American Portrait (Lewis J. Buckley/Cimarron Music) - euph solo w/ concert band

Armed Forces Medley (Lewis J. Buckley/Cimarron Music) - service songs in proper protocol order
What marches are there that are decent to march to in a parade?
Bravura (C. K. Duble)
National Emblem (E. E. Bagley)
Liberty Bell March (Sousa)
El Capitan (Sousa)

I agree to the extent that many of his marches are widely known and real crowd-pleasers, however, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to classify the majority of them as "patriotic"; and some, e.g., Melody Shop, Barnum and Bailey's Favorite, Cyrus the Great, Invictus, The Big Cage—could be a challenge to play while marching.
