Marzan Tuba on craigslist

I think that Marzan is the 'Solo' model. It was made by Willson and is a bit smaller than the more popular 'York' style Marzan tuba. The 'solo' model has a 17" bell. There's one pictured on my web page at:

Oooo! Oooo! Oooo! Oooo! Do you think this one is in BBb? It looks real close to the BBb on Dan's site. Georgetown in is Austin right? Chime in Steven. This looks like a quintet canidate.

Interesting. My CC Solo Model is shorter, more compact, and laquer. It is very similar to Harvey Phillips' Conn. This horn looks taller to me. However, the slide configuration looks similar to mine. (My Marzan Solo Model can be viewed on Dan's website).

My horn has a really sweet sound. However, it is rather tight, especially in the lower register. Dennis Houghton put on a slightly larger leadpipe which has opened things up a bit. My favorite mouthpiece to use on the horn is a PT 42 (a fairly large mouthpiece). I often wish the tuba was a little easier to play, making it more versatile. The biggest complaint I have is that the valve section is turned a little, which makes the hand position a little uncomfortable-- at least for my hand. That being said-- I do like the horn for some things, especially lyrical playing in the middle to upper register.

Could this be a BBb version? I emailed the Craiglister and asked. If he responds I will post it.

I'll bet on the horn in question being of the BBb variety.

What do you mean by"tight"? Not responsive? I play a Mira 184 which is maybe a bit too focused in the low register. Would this be a similar situation?

Bloke makes an excellent point. Regarding my horn... over the years some players have liked it, and some have not. I personally feel the low register is a bit unresponsive in comparison with horns of similar size and bore. This may have little or nothing to do with the instrument advertised on Craig's List.

Ouch! I didn't mean to offend. Just looking for info. Since I can't even get the Craiglister to answer my emails, maybe it's a moot point. I also didn't get an answer on my inquiry about putting a 2nd valve trigger or saddle on my 184. If you are not interested, that's ok. Memphis is a haul for me.

I believe I would be aware if that were your intention. I was really struggling with Microsoft at that particular time and was reading TubeNet to calm down. So I guess I read something into it that wasn't there. Sorry! I have since solved the Microsoft issues and am a much calmer person. I will PM you again about the 2nd valve mod.

Were they made in THREE places (ie: B&M, DePrins, and Kurath) ?
