I remember these things were quite 'the rage' a few years ago... What was the importance of being able to move you mpc? I remember something about response, but didn't remember exactly what this little 'thingy' did.

I think they are about imoving the moving the mouthpiece in or out because the length affects intonation (some mouthpieces ride up in the reciever more than others, etc.).
My teacher has one on his Rudy Meinl 5/4 CC, and I believe that's what he told me it was for.

If you conduct a search for "gap" on the Tubenet forum, you'll see a lot of discussion of that gap. If there's a simple, well understood answer to your question, I'm sure someone will post it before long, but in the mean time you might look at some of that stuff.

One of the best discussions as to "gap" in the receiver between the mouthpiece and the lead pipe is on the Schilke Loyalist webpage sponsored by Dallas Music. I don't personally notice much difference in intonation or response, but some people do, and the article explains why:
