Miraphone CC to BBb Conversion Slide

Post by Dan Schultz »

Well.... OK... so it's not a new topic...

I've had the chance to play my 184-4 CC with the BBb converstion slide in place a few times time since my last post. The performance of the norn as a BBb is nowhere near that of the original CC horn. I'm sure this is due to the cylindrical bore of the additional two feet of tubing. The 'open' notes center just fine. However, all the slides have to be pulled to their extreme to get the intonation under control. The 'C' below the staff has to be played with the 4th valve with the slide pulled to it's extreme. The 'C' in the staff has to be fingered 1-2 (as a 'B' natural). Soooo.... I'll be selling or trading the horn. I'm just not ready to try to become fluent with CC fingerings.

By the way, the answer I got from Ed at Badger State was:

"I found out today from Miraphone that there is no slide to convert the model 184 from a CC to BBb. The slide will not allow it to play properly throughout the scale."
That pretty much echos my earlier post. The horn just doesn't handle very well with the 2' of additonal tubing. Will I sell the slide I was experimenting with??? No... I can't do that. Mainly because my 'experimental' slide was actually a combination of the slides out of my Mirafone 183-4 (Eb), by Mirafone 184-4 (CC), and an extra slide I had in my junkbox. I've since disassembled the conversion slide and put the slides back in my usable horns. I spent the day today boning up on CC fingerings in case I don't sell the CC. The 184 is a good horn... I'm just not wild about adding CC to the already confusing Eb/BBb fingerings.
