Camping near NYC
I'll be moving to NYC soon, and being in the city, I'll be looking for opportunities to get *out* of the city for a long weekend. Anyone up there know of a place to go camping within a 2-3 hour drive of the city? I'll have a car, so the drive isn't a problem. I've done some Google searches, but always looking for other input! Thanks!

Check this site out: http://www.reserveamerica.com/" target="_blank It's very handy, and most campgrounds only accept reservations through this particular site. Hope this helps.

Go up 87, You can hang in Woodstock, Saugerties, or New Paltz, they are great towns, there are tons of places west of New Paltz, Ice caves Mountain is a cool hike and the whole area there is filled with campgrounds. The Shawangunk Mountains are great.
Have fun.

Bear Mountain is a great place to go, but they don't seem to actually have camping there. I have distant memories of camping either there or near there, so there must be something around (unless they got rid of it.) The AT goes nearby, there are plenty of campsites off that.

There's a lot of backcountry camping around Bear Mountain if you don't mind camping *away* from your car
Harriman State Park is gorgeous too, and tons of free camping. If you feel like driving go a few hours up 17 into the Catskills area. Some of the most beautiful mountain hiking in the northeast.. it's all protected forest preserve land, belongs to everybody, I wanna say about 6,000 square miles. I can't recommend this area highly enough, it's truly special. You can also catch a train from Penn Station right to the Appalachian trail, it's on a weird schedule and probably seasonal so be sure to check before you plan. Also by Amtrak, the Vermonter goes between NYC and, you guessed it, Vermont... virtually every stop in Vermont will have some great camping options, and you'll spend less on a fare than you would have on gas, not to mention travel more comfortably.
Not sure what type of camping you're looking for, but if you're a backcountry camper I would adamantly urge you to trek up to the Catskills.. unspeakable beauty up there.

State Parks with camping facilities:
Besides State Parks, there are National Parks, National Forests, State Forests, local community and private facilities.
In National Forests camping in undeveloped areas is allowed (and is free) as long as each forest's local rules are followed. The rules for each forest can be found on its website under "camping." Here is the 'camping' web page for the Finger Lakes National Forest in Upstate New York.
For many, some of the fun is the adventure of exploring new camping areas.
