How I spent my Fourth of July

Post by Lew »

This year, like every year, I was at Dogwood Dell in Richmond with the Richmond Concert Band playing our typical July 4 concert. This year someone apparently taped at least part of the concert and put it up on YouTube. Here's the link:

We are told that Richmond is the only venue where there is a Carrillon, live canon fire, and fireworks all on the same site for the 1812 on July 4th. Apparently even in Boston they have to pipe in the bells, they are not on the same site. In any case, even though we are clearly amateurs, it's fun to play there each yar.

So...something I've never understood: why is the 1812 Overture considered appropriate 4th of July music?

Thrilling. How did you like performing?

I wonder how the Russian resistance to Napoleon's invasion got translated into a US patriotic song? At 2:09 someone was nervous and got the jump on "God Save The Czar" line. Thanks for posting the link.

A piece of music about a battle that took place in Russia over 200 years ago
Did you use a Time Machine to quote this piece of "analysis"?
