Dominant Lip Side

Post by pierso20 »

I've noticed more and more that one side of my lips buzz much more than the other side. (for me, my right side......interestingly, i am right handed).

This isn't from playing off to the side either. When the mouthpiece is places perfectly centered, the right side produces MUCH more buzzing. (Also, When I move the mouthpiece to allow the left side of my lips to have more mouthpiece, they buzz just as well as my right side).

None of this is really a concern, since it doesn't adversely affect my playing. I'm just curious, do other people experience a certain strength that lies more in one area of the lips?

My recommendation?

Don't worry about things that don't matter. If it is not causing you a problem, then leave it alone. We tend to view our embouchure like some people view a pimple - we have to keep PICKING at it! How much mental energy are you wasting thinking about this while you are missing notes because your concentration is somewhere else?

Geeez!

Sorry - it's been a tough day and it's really hot here and I have the weekend from hell coming at me.

It's an interesting thought, but I tend to be afraid to dwell on things like this because if you start to pay too much attention on how you're breathing, you can really screw up something the body already knows how to do even when you are unconscious. It's kinda' like looking at a tree and missing the forrest. I sometimes like to not think a lot when I'm playing - it gets in the way of the music.

My apologies again.

Yeah........it's hotter than hell here...well, humid.

And you're right!! You need to pay attention to the music while your playing and sometimes too much focus on fundamental things like this can mess you up. But since I'm currently not playing at the moment, I wanted to just see what other peoples thoughts might be.

And then again, if we all spent as much time playing as we did posting on this site anyway.....

I completely understand the heat....yuck.

I hope your weekend is less hellish than you may think. Good luck

Cheers

Ordinarily a well-centered sound is desirable. But, with all the election campaigning going on, it is acceptable and understandable that your subconscious right-wing Republican is making itself known.
