That phrase and the thought process behind it is incredibly profound. We would do well to engrave the phrase on every instrument where it can and will be seen by that instrument's operator. And not just musical instruments - PCs, lathes, trucks, socket wrenches, scalpels, law books, and the list goes on.

As the owner of what I consider to be high-end equipment but NOT high-end commitment, I take this truly to heart.

Rick, if I remember my Shakespeare (As You Like It ??) correctly, "Well said. That was laid on with a trowel."

Alex C,

I would be stunned to hear a recording of the Haydn on natural trumpet. I know some of the best natural and historic trumpet players in the world, having worked for a while with a baroque orchestra. Barry Bauguess, a hell of a guy and a hell of a player, uses keyed trumpet, and one of the advances in the past twenty years in historic trumpet playing and making is the better knowledge of the instrument and it's performance characteristics and practice. There's no reason to even try the work on natural trumpet, as it is a suitable for that work as a sitar.

If you know of a recording, please enlighten me.

As for Texas... well, I don't know enough about that state to make a statement about how well they evaluate players, save to say that I know Tubists themselves can carry strong and often (in my opinion) useless biases which the rest of the listening world doesn't not have. Band directors should have a more broad perspective, and not be so miopic on a single acceptable tone quality - no one should.

Then again, maybe I can add this to my short list of reasons not to move to Texas (It's hot enough in Ohio, thank you very much!).

Remember, we have an audience - they don't care about what tuba you use, they just care if it's pretty; and they pay the bills...

Wow, James...you are unbelievable. The level of arrogance is staggering.

10 people nailed the piece one year...how do you know that? Did you listen at the door? We had a word for people like that when I was in high school...loser.

Your teacher said a judge fell asleep...whatever. Any teacher that would tell a high school kid that is part of the problem. What a crock-of-baloney poor excuse for one low score. I hope it made you feel better at the time, but I bet it didn't.

You've rarely had a tuba player on panels...first off, how would you know, and secondly, you talk as if you've played for dozens of them (panels) when in reality you could count them on one hand. Arrogant presumption by someone with very little experience.

You printed off judging forms and your scores (for yourself?) weren't far off from what you really got. Goody for you. Arrogant jerk.

So the judges listening to Blazhevich 17 that year couldn't tell that the guys that made All-State played the wrong rhythm, but you knew. Yeah, whatever. No wonder you get to be a judge...you're so much more qualified than the actual judges were that year!

Ross Boothman sent me back a reply about how students are used...he said when he was a region chair, he simply called the local university and asked the band director for recommendations to fill shortages. I still find it completely appalling, but I suppose the help is needed. Why the heck do you need five judges per room, though?

How dare you come on here acting like a big shot with your little lecture about Kopprasch that was complete crap and then call me a jerk for correcting you on it. Arrogant jerk.

As for your last paragraph...you're saying your region will have 5 judges tied up all day listening to piccolo players in a region "in the middle of nowhere." Does that make sense to you? Anyone else?

Next time you call me a jerk I'll really let loose. That isn't 10% of what I'd like to say to you, but there really isn't any point. You'll brush it off, call me a name, and continue with your ridiculous ramblings.

Oh, and to anyone else who gets the urge to send me a PM about how I mistreat poor James...grow a pair and put it on the board. I'm sure everyone else would get a kick out of it.

It is funny watching this thread go from 1 to 4 pages within a day. Someday James will leave his microcosm and enter the real world. I have tried my best to enlighten this poor boy but to no avail. Others on the board are to be commended for their futile efforts as well. I guess he will just have to learn things the hard way. :|

There is a word I would use for James.

YOUNG.

And that's it. Whatever else you perceive will be corrected with time and experience.

And honestly, even if it's not (corrected), why do you care so much? Is he your kid? Your student? Does he go to your alma mater?

I do find it ironic that the very people who claim to be the most annoyed by him carry on to post the most in said threads, bumping them to the top and perpetuating their misery. To each their own...

ARROGANCE THREAT LEVEL: YELLOW

I, too, commend those who try to steer James' rudderless ramblings into safer harbors. I will tell you why I care what James says and does and why I often contribute to threads of this end.

I am a tuba performance major who is the same age as James. In this sense, I am analogous to him. Whenever I attempt to initiate contact with the real world, be in it the form of a job, scholarship, or internship application, gig booking, or merely a serious conversation with a relative stranger, I am handicapped by the words and actions of James and his ignorant peers.

At my current age and education level, I have to try twice as hard to be taken seriously by people outside of the college world because those people have heard a "James" bitch about how he is the only person in the world who has to do a job he doesn't like, brag about how he missed the fewest notes at the Podunk University band concert, or just fall all over himself in a failed attempt to get his point across.

James: I don't blame you; I don't even have any grounds to dislike you. The college student image problem that I am so worried about isn't caused by you or any other individual; the problem is collective. In the context of TubeNet, I'm sure your posts have the best intentions, but those intentions are often negated by the outcome.

Other than that, I'll just jump on the ol' Wade-Marty-Todd bandwagon.

EDIT: A few minutes too late, perhaps? Such is life.

Just for some more info on your way out...

You're absolutely wrong about the Haydn just as I was earlier in this thread...unlike you, I apologized for the error when I was corrected by J.c.S. Maybe you'd like to explain how the half-step trill at the beginning of the second movement can be done on a natural trumpet, for starters. The melodies in the low octave are just not possible on a natural trumpet...it was intended for a keyed trumpet (Anton Weidinger's).

Your Beethoven reference is about the 4th horn solo in the 9th symphony, rumored to have been written for a valved horn - it can be played by a skilled performer on natural horn, and there is some speculation that it was specifically written for E. C. Lewy. The jury is still out on the issue, and likely always will be, since records of the period are scarce. There is no basis for saying Beethoven's 3rd horn parts are harder, or for valved horns...simply incorrect.

Mozart's horn concerti were written between 1783 and 1791 for his buddy Joseph Leutgeb. They are written for natural horn, using crooks to change the key of the entire instrument. The Kopprasch etudes, again, were published in 1832-1833. They were meant to promote the new techniques possible with the addition of valves and the chromatic possibilities they added.

I would say goodbye, but I know darn well you'll be back soon...so let's just say "until next time."

The answer to this question is NO. James has been done before. Let's hope he calms down and continues. James: You need to control your emotions. If this represents your tolerance level for criticism, you need to know that it will probably get worse as you make your way through life.

A couple of items for the thread:

1) There are five members on each panel of judges in the all-state process in
Texas. As I recall, this is done in an effort to avoid lawsuits. Litigation is
not something TMEA(& ATTSSB) don't want to have to deal with.

2) As evidence of lack of qualification for judges, I can tell you that since I was a
band director, there were times that private teachers would be placed on tuba
and other low brass panels, while I(being such a competent band director) have
judges flute, percussion, and trumpet. After all, I was teaching those
instruments. PLEASE NOTE: I do not feel qualified to judge flute or percussion.

Since you are so done with Tubenet, the least you could do is log out to troll the forum.
