If your horn could talk...

It's unfortunate that tubas don't have traceable titles. Some of the horns I've had in the shop were obviously 'special' to someone many years ago. Like the old Bohland and Fuchs (I think that's what it was!) that I picked up in St. Louis and sold to a fellow in Wichita, Kansas. THAT horn was quite possibly played in European bands or orchestras and finally brought to the US by a professional. But, with no name... no serial number... and no history other that the last couple of years, who knows?

Or... how about the 'Frankenhelicon' I built to use in Oktoberfests. It's made from two Conn 14K sousas from the 60's, a Mirafone bell stack from the 60's, a King bell flare from the 30's, and a few odd slides and tubes from some European tubas. Heck, this horns wouldn't even know what language to speak!

Then there's the Tinker-basso that I built from a Mirafone Eb valve rotor section, a DEG bell, a body crook from a scrap Eb alto horn, slide assemblies from a couple of King 1240 tubas, and a mess of braces out of my 'hellbox'. If this horn and the 'Frankenhelicon' survive a couple of generations they'll REALLY have folks scratching their heads!

My euphonium is a Bossey&Hawkes Imperial . The serial number dates it to 1964. I bought from a seller on ebay who was in Pennsylvania. I have always been curios as to the history on this horn. It was built in Engaln but with a European Shank. Very unuasal for British horns. It came in it's orginal case with these cool stickers from Britian Europe on it :



It seems like it spent most of it's life in the UK but how did it end up here? It has very few dents or dings and the heavy duty silver finish is only worn in a few key areas ...thumb rests, where the hand rests on the tubing next to the 4th valve. It's in excellent shape .





Where was it before and who took such good care of it ? I wonder .
