Walton: Crown Imperial

Post by ZNC Dandy »

The orchestra I play in is performing this on our next concert, and the tuba part has gone missing. Anyone have a scan of the part they could email me. The conductor handed me the bass part and the bass bone part, but its just not the same. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Found this on the Oxford University Press website:
General Information:

Composition:
1937. Substantial cuts were authorized in a 1963 revised version.

First Public Performance:
12 May 1937. Westminster Abbey, London. The Coronation Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult conductor. Played during the entry of Queen Mary, before the beginning of the Coronation Service of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Duration:
Original Version: About 9 minutes
Revised Version: About 7 minutes

Craggs Catalogue Number:
C32

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instrumentation:

3 flutes (third doubling piccolo), 2 oboes, cor anglais, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon – 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba – timpani, 2 percussion (bass drum, side drum, tenor drum, cymbals, triangle, glockenspiel, tubular bell, large gung) – harp – organ (optional) – strings
So at least this version calls for tuba, although I'm not quite sure what a 'large gung' is.

(Maybe I had doubled something on this in past years. Hmm… )
FWIW, there is a "no tuba version" (arrangement? reduction?) floating around out there; I have encountered it being programmed a few times over.

Are you perhaps thinking of the band arrangement with all those very fast C major scales?

I agree on the no tuba version. I "didn't" play it a couple of years ago.

It is a reduced orchestration, its also shortened. ALso, I had this thought, anyone know if the band arrangement and orchestra arrangement are the same key? If so, I may try that.

I'm 99% sure they are both in C major (at least the beginning and ending sections). The band version was a staple of my undergraduate career at OSU, mostly used for commencement ceremonies (I think the director of bands really likes the march). The tuba part in the band version has some very interesting licks, including a run at the very end from A at the bottom of the staff to middle C in 32nd notes!

I played it in Corps this summer...Wait, sorry, I don't think my version would match up with what you'll be playing

I can confirm there is an orchestral tuba part. Played it in rehearsal this evening.
