But I'm sure many of them have World Class Sound.
Which mouthpiece do I need so I can have World Class Sound TM? Will I need a tuba to go with it? I hope not, I can only afford a mouthpiece right now.

Re: The Stodgy Thread
Hey, I was sitting in my community band last night with my new PT-6 and everyone commented how great I sounded. Last week I had my Meinl 2000, but my mouthpiece was holding me back. I have also tried my Mirafone Firebird, Holton 345, York, Baer Meinl-Wesson, and my Thor, but my mouthpieces are holding me back. You would think that out of the 50-60 I own I could find one that would really make me sound the way I know I should. And I went to the local Symphony concert on Friday and the tuba player was playing a Mirafone 186 CC 5U with a Helleberg. That can't be any good because everyone knows that you need a BAT to cover the New World Symphony. I don't think I'll be going back until the tuba player gets the right horn. But what's really cool is that my new Norwegian Star will be in anyday and the local brass band wants me to play the Ellerby Concerto. Not bad for being off the horn for 92 years, is it? Oh yeah, the local community orchestra I play in is doing Mahler 9!!!!!! What horn should I play? What mouthpiece? What do I do with the bass part when I'm not playing the tuba part? I guess the bass player needs some help. Do I read the part at pitch or take it down an octave. Boy, this is going to be great, the orchestra has 32 people in it AND ALMOST ALL OF THEM HAVE REAL INSTRUMENTS. Now if the Principal Trumpet (he's an insurance adjustor) will just get that Monette trumpet I have been telling him about, he will sound great with or with out his lower partial in.

Re: The Stodgy Thread
I've been wondering who has the best band - Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines. Does anybody on here know?
If I want to get into the Air Force band, do I need to go to the Air Force Academy? How do I do that? What if one of the other ones has a better band?

Re: The Stodgy Thread
Should I play my F tuba or the Eb sousaphone on the bass tuba part in the tuba-euph quartet? if I play the sousa, should I point the bell backwards, or should I point it forwards and then just tell everyone to play louder? Should I use my CC mouthpiece or my F mouthpiece on the sousa? If I use a sousa stand, can I still have my F tuba on stage since I might need it? What's the best recorder to use to show all of you how well we play? What mike should I use with it? Can I get a mike for $10 that will do the job? Do you think we should all have our stands at the same height? If we xerox the music to avoid page turns, some of it flops off the stand to the side; do you think that looks worse than if we have to turn a page at a bad time? Should we all use the same type of stand, or is it ok if some people use wire stands and others use Manhassets? Do you think we should all wear pants, or should we make the guys wear skirts so we all look alike?

Re: The Stodgy Thread
Just wanted to let everyone know that I am playing "Come to Jesus" tomorrow for the ENTIRE student body of East Southwest Northern Texas Community College and Juvenile Holding Facility. Does anyone have the music they can send me as a pdf file? Does anyone have a recording they can send me? BTW, my chops are real messed up and I can't get the top 4 Octaves of my 5 octave range. What should I do? I know it really doesn't hurt my World Class Sound, but I have a big audition coming up for the Snagglepuss Community Band and Symphony Orchestra and need the tuba part to the 3rd Movement of Furd Burfles 3rd Symphony. Can you pdf me the part in the next 5 minutes? TIA.

Play in Scottish kilts. Play standing up to avoid any unfortunate accidents for the audience if you have guys. Use double wide stands, all at the same hight, which would be for the shortest player. Use a double F/Eb tuba, so the right one is always at hand. Sheesh! Haven't you ever performed before!?MaryAnn wrote:If we xerox the music to avoid page turns, some of it flops off the stand to the side; do you think that looks worse than if we have to turn a page at a bad time? Re: The Stodgy Thread
Hey guys, my teacher recommended to me a different mouthpiece from what I use now (Joey Balogna 24PBR) because he thinks that I will like it better and will sound better. I do not agree with his bold assumption because I believe my sound is worthy of the moniker "World Class" (I got a 2 at District Solo/Ensemble!!!!!!!1) and a different mouthpiece would just bring me down. Plus, my friend Stinky Fingers told me that if I changed mouthpieces even once, my ombushur (my grades are good enouch, idc) would become totally worthless and my lips would break

Hey guys I was just wondering which one is better, rotors or pistons??? What do you think? I've heard that rotors are better. But, I heard that pistons are better. So which is better?

Is it a toploader or a front loader? It makes a difference. You *never* bring down a toploader.the elephant wrote:Hey, guys. I am left handed and I need to know how many measures before and after playing I need to wait before I can legally put my horn up or down. I have an audition coming up and do not want to get penalized for early or late visual effects. My stats: Amati BBb three piston valver with an Amado water key on the leadpipe, GPS on the top bow, spinners and a stainless Monette Prana custom. Remember that I am left handed. (I am sure that is important.) Oh, and I will be playing Fountains down an octave on the Amati because of its World Class false tones.

You'll have to spend a little more - maybe $20. What you really need is a wireless microphone for that vintage tuba sound and the freedom of movement. Here's what I use.MaryAnn wrote:Can I get a mike for $10 that will do the job?

Wear a tux made of man-made material, not cotton. Then it'll be shiny already and nobody will notice...bloke wrote:I put Yamaha valve oil on the outside of my tuba before our annual Fall Break Concerto Concert. It hid the scratches in the lacquer really well (it is a Yamaha tuba), but at the reception, my tux pants looked like I had pee-ed in them. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Re: The Stodgy Thread
While I was practicing the Bydlo last night on my BBb tuba, which I've found to be just perfect for that solo, I lost my spit valve cork. How much is it going to cost me to get it replaced? I was thinking about just cutting a replacement out of an old bicycle tube but I don't have the right size plug cutter.
Should I have it replaced with natural cork or neoprene? Which one will improve my tone?
Could one of you repairmen post the step by step procedure, preferably 8x10 glossies with circles and arrows and explanations on the backs?

Re: The Stodgy Thread
I asked one of the doctors in our band for you. He said that what you needed was a complete spinal realignment and months of physical therapy. At least that's what I think he said. He'd had a few liters of beer and was eating a bratwurst at the time so I guess I could have misunderstood. He's an allergist, which is some kind of doctor, isn't it?the elephant wrote:Oh, man! I hate when that happens! Good luck with that. It is a real killer to deal with. Have you seen a doctor about it? (Lots of oom-pah band members are doctors, from what I hear on the intrawebs.)bloke wrote:The cross-strap on my lederhosen keeps getting caught on the spring in my 5th valve slide trigger...' any tips?

I was performing my semi annual mouthpiece cleaning before practice tonight and noticed that the water swirled counterclockwise as I flushed it out. Is this normal? Why did it only swirl counterclockwise?

Or is it the Cornholio Effect...

Does anyone have a glitter gold kelly mouthpiece for sale? I understand they are the best.
I hope it is OK to post a "for sale" message in this thread. Moderators please feel free to move this post to the correct forum. Sorry if I upset anyone.
