Who is H.W. Tyrrell?

Post by phatty77 »

Can anyone tell me any info on the background to H.W. Tyrrell's 40 Advanced Studies for BB flat Tuba. I particular I'm trying to find out who Tyrrell is and what was the purpose of the etudes. Thanks.

Try sending a PM to sponsor Dan Oberloh. I'll bet he knows.

When I Googled that name, a year or so ago, I uncovered a similarly named man who was Disraeli's chief aide when Disraeli was prime minister. I do not know if it is the same man but, if it is, the books were most likely for use by British military musicians. If you have not gotten the Eb book, it is something worth looking over and playing through. Where the Bb book truncates and caps upward movement at Bb or C, the Eb book goes up to F at some places but never below the A below the bass clef staff 3 ledger lines. I would really like to know more about this composer and I really hope he is the same as the Disraeli aide.

I had an adult trombone student who had a book of trombone etudes by H.W. Tyrell. They were not the same etudes as in the BBb tuba book. He may have been a trombone player that doubled tuba and wrote etudes for both.

Thanks for the suggestions. None have lead to an answer yet but I'm not giving up.

Why don't you post on this British Brass Band forum and ask them?

Weren't these originally Boosey publications so I would guess they were for brass band instruction but who knows?
