There is a book for trombone by Brad Edwards that is very good. (I have yet to order it, but memorized some patterns that have been quite helpful for me.)
It is a very sequential book, but not in the "negative" sense. As far as using it for instruments NOT pitched in Bb, you can figure out some other options, but it a fantastic volume of ideas, esp. for those who play trombone also.
(If I could remember the EXACT title, I would state it now, but I think it's something like...Progressive lip slurs, yadda, yadda, for tone building...) If I still had the borrowed book, I'd give to you now, but... I'm sure somebody will offer it up soon!
Bye, for now!

I play the Max Schlossberg trumpet "lip drills" and also improvise some patterns of my own.

I'll second the Brad Edwards book for lip slurs ("Lip Slurs: Progressive Exercises for Building Tone & Technique," Ensemble Publications). My wife is a trombone player who went to school with Brad at Hartt, and she introduced me to one of his exercises, #15 "Building Chords using Alernate Positions" on page 13. What a fun and musical way to do slurs. Wide slurs, steady air, and best of all, there is a real musical groove!! Beyond just slurring as a mechanical exercise, I find this one fun and musical.bttmbow wrote:There is a book for trombone by Brad Edwards that is very good. For technical facility and sheer velocity, I also like the lip slur studies from the Arban-St. Jacome method for trumpet.
BTW - Some of Roger Bobo's slur exercises can be found in his book "Mastering the Tuba" from Editions BIM.

The Michael Davis 20-Minute Warmup is worthwhile. The book comes with CD accompaniment which helps keep rhythm and intonation accurate. Gene Pokorny plays on the CD in the tuba version of the book. There is a description and audio samples at Davis's Hip-bone Music website.

I'll 3rd this one. There isn't a better book for slurs available. Just bought it from Hickey's.bttmbow wrote:There is a book for trombone by Brad Edwards that is very good.

I definitely have to second this text. It gets progressively more difficult the further back in the book you get. Some of the ones at the end are CRAZY!!!!!
Good luck!
