This is great! I missed this one before.
Bravo, Alan!
If you haven't gotten his 2nd CD, get it. Amazing playing and it's a bunch of great music, too.

Interesting to see Mr. Baer using a tuba stand even for a small F

that tuba is by no means a, "small F". It is quite possibly the largest F tuba I have ever played. I can see it working well for a large orchestra like the New York Phil, but in my opinion it sounds and plays too much like a C tuba. When I get an F tuba, I want something that SOUNDS like one too.

Yes. I did not think that I wanted one of those. When I got my heavier horn, I decided to give one a try and now wouldn't like to go without it. It holds the mouthpiece right where I want it. I don't need to 'fight gravity' to keep the horn where it should be.Neptune wrote:Interesting to see Mr. Baer using a tuba stand even for a small F
Regarding another thread:
Mr. Baer has *no* problems with his low C.

That's probably why they make so many different types and styles. To each their own....Tubaguyjoe wrote:that tuba is by no means a, "small F". I also was lucky enough to also read that post before it was deleted. I have very much come around to that way of thinking too. My choice of using my Neptune or Melton Eb is largely made on what I perceive as the appropriate tone for the music. Bass tubas and contrabass tubas should have their own distinctive tone. I have never heard a Kodiak live, but it certainly sounds like a bass tuba on that video with Alan Baer behind the mouthpiece.bttmbow wrote:Wade, you put up an interesting post that "got deleted(?)" Re: Youtube video with Alan Bear on the Kodiak
It is a very big F tuba. Very big.
In his masterclass at ITEC this past summer, Mr. Baer talked a little bit about using stands.
Playing with the tuba on a stand as opposed to resting on legs allows for more resonance due to less dampening on the bottom bow. Also, you can get precise with a stand so that you tuba is placed exactly where you want it each time.
