What do you play on now for orchestral stuff? Is the only thing you don't like about them is that you can't get the power for an orchestra? I ask this because I think a lot of people would called a G&W Bayamo a "big horn" mouthpiece for a "big ensemble" (not exclusive, though). It would probably help if you told us what you do and do not like about your current arsenal, but the suggestions in this thread already are nice.

I currently own a G&W Bayamo, a Bach 18, and a Marty Erickson ME3. I am really in need of a balanced orchestral mouthpiece, however. I am in search of a mouthpiece with enough carrying power for a large orchestra, but with great clarity. Any recommendations are appreciated.

The carrying power is up to you. If you can't carry the load using what you have, then I respectfully suggest that changing mouthpieces won't solve that problem. But I find that the PT-48 and the Stofer Geib mouthpieces help me with clarity and focus on a big tuba, and help to avoid woofiness. I have not compared these with the mouthpieces you already have, however.

It would really help if you could tell us what instrument you're using also - if you're trying to support an ensemble of 75 with a 3/4 horn no mouthpiece change will probably make enough difference - if you're trying to clear-up a muddy sounding BAT, it's a completely different issue......

I'm playing a Willson 3050S and am currently "auditioning" a G&W Caver. You might consider that one, especially if you have a preference for the 33.5 rim size.

I'm not an expert by any means, - so I'll limit this to my own experience, after lots of experimentation: FWIW: On a big horn like that I'd look for a slightly smaller mouthpiece that wasn't as deep as the Bayamo - I'm had good results with a shallow mouthpiece matched to a large bore 6/4 horn. The Rudy I play has a .866 bore, and responds really nicely to a mpc in the C-4, Laskey 30C or Sidey MBL-II range. (Shallower bowl-shaped cups, medium rim diameter.) I've found that my low range suffers with smaller rim diameters, and smaller bore mouthpieces, but the depth seems to change the response and clarity more than the width of the mouthpiece. There have been multitudes of discussions on this board (all good info, if you wade through the personal opinions and biases ) regarding large horns needing smaller mouthpieces, and if you're looking for an easier high register, a smaller rim diameter may help. How's your range with the Bach-18? Good luck - and let us know what you find works for you --
