Who's Hosting for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is our annual family reunion time down in Nashville. 15 aunts and uncles (my mom's the youngest of , 15 cousins, 2 grandparents, and various cousins' significant others...about 40 people under one roof from Tuesday to Sunday. Awesome.

*edit* 40-50 pounds of turkey will be made on Thanksgiving Day. Lots of sandwiches and stew on Friday

I supervise the menu (I actually am a decent cook) and start around 0600, Dinner is served at 1430, and the staff usually gets treated to my Dixieland Band after this, and they get to go to bed early, at around 1900 or so, because they are too pooped to go on. They usually contact us within a week after to book the next year.
Most of these seniors are disabled veterans. We do this at the Veteran's Home at King, WI. It makes my day very enjoyable, despite the work.
But these people deserve it. And I'm proud to do it, as a Navy man myself.

Now that is doing the Lord's work. Actions DO speak louder than words, something some have forgotten around here and most of the world. I don't know you, but I like you for giving of yourself to an age group that is largely forgotten. You getting this Dylan?

I am hosting the inlaws this year. The wife and i recently moved to a larger house and are able to do this for the first time. I am going the Tuesday before to my maternal grandmother's house for a lesson in how to properly bake pumpkin pie....

We're hosting the annual Thanksgiving Breakfast Extravaganza. My wife and I started doing this because all of the kids and their possys could never seem to make it over for T'day supper at the same time. They would be off with the ex's, or girl friend's or boy friend's houses for the more traditional Thanksgiving fare. This way we get 'em while they are still hungry and alert. It's a blast. Everyone pitches in and helps with the cooking on stovetop & grill. If it's a breakfast food it's proly represented. The kids are usually out the door befor 1:00PM (off to their next meal) and Carol & I are usually cleaned-up and blissfully relaxing by 2:00PM.

My bride is one of 5 kids. We rotate between houses. This year we are in the big city of Conway Ar., Hello Arkietuba. Be about 30 of us. We'll make a side trip up to the old family farm, have a few laughs, cry a few tears and eat a lot of good country cookin'.

Normally, I work on Thanksgiving, and the routine has been get home, help prep the meal, go to bed, wake up, eat, shower and go to work. We host, and host anyone in the extended blended family that wants to come, usually anywhere from 1-10 guests.

This year I will be in Hawaii. My 25th anniversary is Thanksgiving Day. Lots to be thankful for. I think we'll go to a luau.

Well, technically we're visiting our daughter and family in Atlanta, but my wife and I will be doing most of the cooking. So, I guess it's the worst of both the visiting and hosting worlds.

We're going to be camping with friends on Thanksgiving. For lunch we're going to Cracker Barrel, then back to camp to watch Texas vs. Texas A&M. HOOK 'EM HORNS !!

The past few years, my brother has been hosting out at his house, so that is where I'll be. It's a little different than I'm used to...we used to gather with my dad's entire family at a party hall we'd rent out, everyone would cook and bring food, and we'd have Thanksgiving mega-buffet style. These days t's a little more reserved. It'll be me and my girlfriend, my parents, my younger brother, my brother and his wife, their baby, my sister-in-law's sisters (with their husbands and kids), and her mother. Much smaller crowd, but it's still nice. I'll be bringing a pie of some kind.

What memories - I used to go to the Jim's at I-35 & Ben White when I rode with the Highway Patrol. Coffee & tea were free & meals were half price.

There was a Jim's in north Austin at 183 & I-35, too, but I liked the south one better. The mgt liked having the DPS troopers & Austin cops there late on Friday & Saturday nights to keep the late-night revelers in check.

When we as a world stop killing in the name of whoever God or diety you worship, and when we stop wearing our faith on our collective sleeves like so many medals won in a war, and get down to the business of caring for ALL HUMANITY, no matter what/who/or how they believe, then I may buy into the whole organized religion thing. I believe in a supreme being, recognize Jesus, Mohammed, Bhudda, Erda, and a whole host of others as wonderful teachers, but not necessarily as the be-all-and-end-all of ones faith. I think they are all weeping in agony over what has been done "in their names". Thus, I chose to keep my faith as I respect the way you keep yours.

This will undoubtedly get pulled, but my "faith" is as strong as anyones. I want equality for every living being no matter who they worship, and for the world to come to the understanding that there is no right way or wrong way, no right person, no wrong person to believe in. Religion is a CULTURAL IMPERATIVE that allows humans to be in the company of like minded people who agree with them on how their particular religion has explained life's intangibles to their comfort level. In our continued process of evolution (yes, I believe in it, if you don't, that's cool) hopefully we come to the realization that all mankind should come together with our common good in mind, not some systems of beliefs that have become so strictured and poisoned over the past 2000-10,000 years as to have evolved into a set of dogmatic pablum that gives one person the "divine" right to kill another and for one sovereign nation to exploit others. History is, indeed, the propaganda of the victors, a Pyrrhic victory though. I hope all mankind can set aside their religous and cultural differences and assume the mantle of Peace for all humanity.

With all due respect to your religion, I will respond to your statements as well. I am having a difficult time understanding the phrase "dope it out", but I will do my best to sort out a few of your thoughts in ways that my little creationist mind can understand.

For one thing, the world is not killing anyone in the name of the God that I worship. My God is the Ever Living One, Creator of the universe and Father of Jesus Christ, the Logos or Word of the Eternal. God commands His people not to kill (Exodus 20:13), and those who use His name falsely and in vain to kill His children are really killing in the name of Satan the devil and his demons. I would just like to be clear, as the God that I worship commands man to even love our enemies (Matt 5:44).

True followers of God are commanded to wear our faith on our sleeves, for we are representing Him to a world that does not know Him (Ezekiel 3:16-27). It is our duty to God to bring the truth of His Way to all who will listen, and to bring a warning message as a witness to those who will not. This is not a choice, but a mission that we must perform in our covenant with God. The words of Truth are life, and those who kill in the name of God are not loving the REAL God, but another god.

I would be very careful about recognizing the teachings of Mohammed as "wonderful", especially if all you want is peace.

"I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them." (Qur'an 8:12)

"Therefore, WHEN YOU MEET THE UNBELIEVERS, SMITE AT THEIR NECKS; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost." (Surah 47:4)

Nobody has conquered death but Jesus Christ (Col 1:18), therefore none of the dead are "weeping in agony", for they sleep in death and know nothing. Christ is the only Living Being that is Eternal.

I also must point out (with all due respect to the religion of equality) that there is a RIGHT way and a WRONG way. Even human nature points out that it is wrong to kill, as I think that you would agree, Mr. Jackson. If you are so into peace and equality, how can you say there isn't right and wrong, good and evil? Those who have faith in the God of the Bible believe that the Ten Commandments and God's laws and statutes tell man what is right and wrong, the correct way to treat God and our fellow man.

We know that our own heart is foolish and evil, and without the fear of God there is no wisdom.

This Thanksgiving will be the most significant to me, as I have so many reasons to be thankful, and I will also be hosting the feast for the first time in my own home (which is also my first home).

This past year I was given my dream job, promoted quickly in that job due to Godly success, given my dream house, married in Holy matrimony, and given material and spiritual wealth beyond any expectation. This all truly comes from God and His promise to Abraham and his seed, that has through the generations been passed down to the American and British descended peoples. Without God's blessings and the freedom this country provides, many of us here in the USA would be a more hungry for a lot more stuff.

My wife and I will be cooking for her parents, and brother and wife, as well as my mother, who has recently retired from a long, tiring career in Hollywood, and moved to Virginia to relax for a time. We are looking forward to a peaceful and loving national celebration of God's gifts to this great nation with our family and four cats.

My wife, a certified saint, has been with my sister several states away (helping her get through a difficult pregnancy, and take care of - total with both families combined - 5 kids under 5) since a few days before Halloween. Probably Thanksgiving week, I'll fly there and we'll all drive back home, to get ready for a house full of Thanksgiving guests.

Considering all that, we are seriously thinking about a Thanksgiving dinner of Macaroni and Cheese.

And BTW, I've often disagreed with Dylan's post and commentary, but I've never found him to be demeaning or offensive - he simply says what he believes in a positive way.
