I have just begun with the Jon Sass Bass Line Book and can recommend it.
Very interesting bass figures, nice little rhythmic and harmonic studies for each line and a cd to play to.

I'll second KHHS. I have both books and find the Sass book much more interesting and helpful. It is about 3x the price, though . . .

To avoid misunderstanding: I don't recommend the Sass book OVER the Stewart book, which latter I have never seen (but will probably acquire). I know Bob Stewart from the Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy recordings - beautiful tuba playing (definitely not just substituting a string bass). Does he really get that powerful sound from a little Yamaha 621 (CC?)?
But still, the Sass-lines are interesting and inspiring, too.

Bob plays the little Yamaha Bb. His mike setup definitely helps, at least on live gigs, not sure what he does in the studio.KHHS wrote:To avoid misunderstanding: I don't recommend the Sass book OVER the Stewart book, which latter I have never seen (but will probably acquire). Unless Bob very recently switched to Bb, I know that he was playing a silver 621CC for many years. That's what he played a few years ago when he was our guest artist at our Howartd Hovey Tuba Day event. He told me that it had a different leadpipe than what they put on the 621 these days. He also uses a big mp, but I forgot which one it was. He gets a big sound out of the set up. He wasn't amplified for our event, but he showed his mic set up too.

I don't dispute this. Bob is one of my favorite of all players. I just like Jon's book better.snufflelufigus wrote:

The examples have a serious emphasis on funk. Does he ever get to other types of bass lines?
