Cininnati SO - Ottorino Respighi

Post by Liberty Mo »

I just purchased Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Telarc recording of Respighi's Church Windows/Brazilian Impressions/Roman Festivals for the budget price of $2. It was recorded back in 1994, so I may be WAY behind the curve on the board, but it is completely mindblowing. As a hobbyist, finding a recording like this evidences both why I enjoy playing so much and why I am but a mere hobbyist.

The trombone/tuba section in Church Windows Mvt. II - Saint Michael The Archangel made my jaw drop. I'm guessing it was Peter Norton and Mike Thornton who have been in Cincinnati for a long time (I don't know if Norton was principal or bass during the recording) cranking out a huge sound.

If you don't have it, get it. If you do, dust it off.

Yes and yes. Pete I believe would have been playing bass. Tremendous recording.
