Do these have tuba parts?

Post by Biggs »

The orchestra is playing a couple arias and other opera "highlights." Do I need to show up for any of the following?

"Dio, mi potevi scagliar" from Othello by G. Verdi
"Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci by R. Leoncavallo
"Notung" from Siegfried by R. Wagner
"Nessun dorma!" from Turandot by G. Puccini
"Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz" from Das Land des Lachelns by F. Lehar

Thanks!

PS: Does Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld not have tuba? For some reason, I thought there was some type of tuba/ophicleide part...

"Dio, mi potevi scagliar" from Othello by G. Verdi
*Verdi never wrote for tuba, but the opera calls for cimbasso

"Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci by R. Leoncavallo
*I haven’t answered to my satisfaction what this part is written for, but I think Cimbasso; I have no idea if the aria calls for it.

"Notung" from Siegfried by R. Wagner
*Probably. Anyone a Wagner scholars here?

"Nessun dorma!" from Turandot by G. Puccini
*Another cimbasso opera, but I don’t think it plays in this aria.

"Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz" from Das Land des Lachelns by F. Lehar
*I may have played an arrangement, but I think this one does have a nearly disposable tuba part.

I don't think Orpheus has a lower brass instrument other than bones. Anyone else? I've only played excerpts, none of which have tuba/ophicleide.

Regarding the Offenbach, I checked the LUCK'S music library site.

http://www.lucksmusic.net/cat-symph/sho ... ogNo=06388" target="_blank

It shows 4231 for the brass instrumentation; i.e., 4 horns; 2 trumpets; 3 trombones; 1 tuba

There is stuff to play in the cimbasso part for "Nessun dorma". And while a little less so after following the Luck's link above, I'm pretty certain that J.c. was correct that there are only 3 bones in Orpheus.

Pierre, I think you and J.c.S. are correct. In re-reading the LUCK'S site, it shows their available arrangement has a tuba part, but further down says the original version had no tuba.

Luck's "Can Can" excerpt/arrangement does have a tuba part.

... And Luck's just sent me a "Trumpet in D" part for Handel's "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from "The Messiah" which is actually a transposition for Bb trumpet  !

I'm not a fan of Lucks right now
