Aren't these little tiny tubas to take on tour? (Tornister?) Kinda like the MW travel tuba.

Why? Why not?

I hope Klaus is not pulling my leg and these are actually available. These horns were originally produced for the military in about 1900. I've read that Cerveny made them. They were a backpack tuba.

These are cool in the same way a pocket trumpet/cornet is cool. On the practical side, they are small and would be able to be taken along in many situations.

I imagine they would be kind of expensive for what it is. There are pocket trumpets that sound like poo for a couple of hundred. Ones that sound good start at about $600 and top out at about $1800. That's a lot of money for a novelty device. The BBb model is EUR4900. That's about USD6300. That's a lot of money for a novelty device.

I think Neptune should get one of these to hang off the back of his big Cerveny. Kinda like a lifeboat on an ocean liner. It's easy to spend another man's money. I should work for the government. ;)

That's just me actin' kinda goofy again.... A Tournister would just be cool to own.

(EDIT: I looked at Tucci's page after I posted. I went back and edited for price..)

Doesn't seem to be a joke. Here's the Babelfish version: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_ur ... =Translate" target="_blank" target="_blank

Price starts at 3920 Euros (so $4981 for those Stateside, not including import duties). Yikes.

The English version of the page includes the comment that "in all cases price includes Value Added Tax." I don't believe, for horns shipped out of Europe, that the VAT is collected. I don't know how much this tax is but I suspect the price for American consumers is less than the one shown in the ad. Klaus, can you enlighten us about this and, while you are at it, include something to indicate the relative size of these horns?

It says that the hight is 52 cm, that is a bit more than 20 inches.
And the bell measures 240 mm which is 24 cm or almost 9 1/2 inches.

:P  I wonder if they are any good as a marching tuba? Shame there is no CC!

They look a really old design, right down to the slicer on the bottom bow and the bell decoration. If it was April 1st, I would wonder!

As far as I get it the German VAT is 19%, so that out-of-EU export prices should be divided by 1.19 to get the price prior to shipping, insurance, and local import taxes.

Most dimensions have been provided. What bothers me in that context is the very small bore of 15mm, less than 0.600". I certainly would like such little thing in the BBb 4 valve version, but I doubt I could make any useful sounds come through it with such tiny bore. And the basic model with 3 valves already is priced at a level, where I will not be a taker.

I cannot tell the maker from the engraving right under the checkered reflection. The origin is described in a vague wording making me remember terms like German Engineering from certain online auction presentations. Mr. Tucci is close with MW as well as with B&S (same ownership). MW is about to release a more elaborate travel tuba in F at a higher price point.

I receive the newsletter (in German) from Mr. Tucci’s shop. Hence I relayed the information available. Still I find this re-issue of an old Cerveny concept lightly odd. As I do about the issuing of 3 student mouthpiece in an off-shot of the PT line. They all have a 32mm inner diameter, which also is found in some professional models.

These offerings would be well placed in an optimistic market. But can the current situation be described that way?

OK, with the 9 1/2 inch bell and the .590 bore, I can see it in an F tuba. But BBb? To me, even the beginner tubas with 14 inch bells and .640 bores seem too small. Anyone played either yet?

There seems to be more than one manufacturer. At least, the picture is not exactly the same.
More info, however in German http://www.tubatreff.de/meldung/?id=58.

This posting was written in response to a posting apparently gone in the mean time. I my eyes the gone posting was neither irrelevant, ugly, nor offending. The subject was about this tuba (rather similar to the Mahillon F tuba of Howard Johnson before he went to the old Boosey 3+1 compensating F):

My original posting:

I am aware of that Belgian 3+2P F tuba. But even if I assume that tuba to be musically way more interesting than the F Tornister tuba, it still isn’t on my short list. Primarily because of the price, but also because space is a factor in my home. Right now I am rearranging the display/playing area, and there isn’t much place for the instruments to stay while I am working.

And then the 3+2 non-comp arrangement already is represented here by a de Prins Saxhorn basse in Bb, albeit the 3rd valve lowers the main bugle 2 whole steps. By pulling the semitone 5th valve to 3/4 step I get an almost useable full chromatic scale down to the open pedal. I am not sure, that the 3+2P F tuba with its normal minor third 3rd valve will provide tubing for the low F#.

Yes there appear to be at least 3 makers of Tornister/Tübchen/travel tubas, where all make the F variant, but only the Tucci model comes in BBb also.

The Jestädt and the MW come standard with 4 valves, which must be the bare minimum for an F tuba. The Tucci F model has the 4th valve and a trigger as options.

Jestädt is a master workshop rather than a factory. MW is pretty well known in tuba circles. But the maker behind the Tucci model puzzles me. Can somebody with sharp eyes recognise the engraving?

It's impossible to see the details but according to the blue-white colors on the bell it's certainly a Bavarian manufacturer.

Yes, I recognises the blue & white checkered Bavarian sign, but I rather took it as a reflection of something in the room.
