A Wild A** Guess (based mostly on mustache recognition :? ) would be Red Callender, jazz & rock tubist and string bass player. Here is a picture of him in 1988, latest I could find right off.

A short musical bio: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/musician.php?id=3841 Lots of territory there!

If not him, I have no idea.

Based on the clues, the first two people that come to my mind are former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley and Barbadian cricket legend Sir Garry Sobers. I'll be really surprised if it's either but it's fun to give some of my mind's lesser used crevices a workout.

Getting nowhere on this! Need more clues...

In the meantime, what about this guy - is he famous too? (I do not know the answer.)

Just a lucky guess, right?

Kilton Vinal Smith 1909-1987 Born in Vinalhaven, Kilton followed in his mother’s footsteps-Albra Vinal Smith was a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and taught music in the Vinalhaven schools. She also led local orchestras and dance bands. Kilton graduated from Vinalhaven High School in 1927, attended the conservatory and in 1933 joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) as a trombonist, then becoming the BSO’s tuba player.http://www.vhpie.org/auditorium.htm

I am so disappointed in Google image search...

What about the other picture of the maybe famous plastic sousaphone player? There may be a link to Wooten College, but I cannot prove it.

Not really. I read the clues and ignored the picture. Then it took me less than 5 minutes.

I messed around with Google for just a little bit. A Google search for the following did the trick:

tuba player "born on" island "his mother"

That led me here where I found the picture:

Since I'm too late to identify Vinal Smith (though I found the Vinalhaven web site researching another thread without having read same on this one), I decided to tackle this one.

But I can't figure it out. My suspicion is that he is just a guy like the rest of us. When the Scot Band of Wooster College posted pictures of their band reunion of 2004-2005, this guy's picture was just called "used tuba".

Do we know of a famous tuba player who was in the Wooster Scot band at one time? If so, you may get your answer.
