I see that it says you have to be a resident of the UK to participate in this competition (Young soloist).

Ahh, it doesn't say that on the home page of the website. You have to download the .pdf of the application form before you find that out.

What a shame.

Here's the answer from Al Booth, producer of BBC Radio 2's Listen to the Band:

As the BBC is a publicly funded body,
competitions are open only to those who pay the BBC license fee, ie
British residents.
