I recently checked out Jim Self's website, and found a very useful change on his YFB-822. The main tuning slide's position is different to the normal YFB-822, in a much-much better way. Its at the back side of the pistons, you can reach and adjust it anytime - even during playing the tuba.
I've two questions:
How complicated is it to change a normal YFB-822's tuning slide to one like this?
Why dont build instrumentmakers tubas like this?

The slide at the top of Jim's tuba is for the fourth valve, Yamaha made this tuba for him about ten years ago. He has since had Robb Stewart install a self centering (no pun intended) tuner on the main tuning slide. I have one on my YFB822 as well, I'll try to post a picture later.

Many people consider the pun to be the lowest/simplest form of humor, and Norm threw out two really good ones!!
He was talking about Dr. Self's horn.
1. "Self"-centering tuner Dr. Self is the player and he centers the tuning.
2. "Self" taught tubaist (from the signature line) Norm was a student of Dr. Self?
Amazing how the jokes loose their humor when you have to explain them.
well, i thought it could have been Self centering, as in egotistical (though not entirely sure how it works)

"self centering" (NOT Self centering) simply means the slide can be pushed in or out and it always returns to the starting position. Robb Stewart made this for me about thirteen years ago. Lot's O' miles on this old YFB822
