Red Rot, What to do.

Post by tubatom91 »

I am wheeling and dealing on a Benge trumpet right now, it's not a fancy one but I still enjoyed playing it, anyways....I cleaned a but of it out and found two patches of red rot in leadpipe. I imagine that this severly depleats the value of the horn, so what can I do to fix/stop this red rot from spreading or totally eating through? Is it even worth me buying it for occaisional use? what would your offer be? (it's a Benge model 3, UMI produced)

Yes, what bloke said. Red Rot is the dissipation of the zinc out of the brass alloy, so there is no "fix." Replacement of the affected part(s) is the only solution.

The second trumpet in the orchestra here in vegas had Kanstul replace his leadpipe and he seams to be very happy ... they do good work from what I have seen.

Replacing a trumpet leadpipe is a very easy job.
