Navy Band Tour 2009

Post by Karl H. »

The US Navy Band is on tour from 15 February to 15 March. Details can be found at this link:

http://www.navyband.navy.mil/tourcb.shtml" target="_blank

Note that you can preview the program and pick which show you'd rather see. Two different programs are performed on tour, and there are variations to programs for appearances at ABA and UNT. This will be Roger Behrend's last tour as a member of the Navy Band: don't miss it! Personnel in the relevant sections are:

Roger Behrend and Joe Dollard, euphoium
Karl Hovey and Andrew Oppenheim, tuba

As always, tickets are free (but you must get tickets: we sell out). We love meeting TubeNetters on our travels, and any suggestions on fine dining and refreshments are always appreciated!

Karl,

The Navy Band brass section is awesome. I didn't realize how good it was until I heard you guys up close in a good hall a couple of years ago.

I wish the conducting talent was able to match the playing talent in the premier military bands in the US. If it did, I would be attending military band concerts more often than symphony orchestra concerts.

The Jackson Auditorium in Seguin, Tx. is a relatively small auditorium, but the acoustics are quite good there. I have some hope of making that performance.

Tour Day 2.

Quick replies:

And if Matt Neff is playing bass bone on this tour, take all of your bass bone buddies along for the show. Matt can play some serious bass bone.

Yep, Matt's along for the ride, and he's a great player: almost good enough to be an "Honorary" tuba player...

almost.

Hi Art! You mean in addition to our wonderful last name? Love to talk anytime.

BTW, the same link above should get you to the Navy Band webpage, where you can find out the regions we will be visiting for the next few years...

Off to Boone!

Greetings from Boone!

Fun concert, good folks and, going on the recommendation of App. State alum Dave Miles, good eats! Had a role-out-the-door good meal at local great Daniel Bonne Inn. Good country cookin' served family style (fixed menu of goodies all brought to your table at once. Eat all you want; they'll bring more!).

Had to go to the gym to work off the excess...

Just saw you in Hickory tonight. Wonderful job! I had several of my middle school students in attendance; they were smiling from ear to ear!

Mornin!

Great concert in Hickory last night: full house of very enthusiastic folks, band's starting to hit its stride. Even enjoyed the ride over the mountains from Boone. Some beautiful vistas with winding roads that made me miss having my bike with me. I seem to remember one Lance Armstrong having an epiphany during a bike ride in Boone... but I digress.

Quick word about "sold out" venues: the Navy Band, like many performing groups (and airlines, for that matter) routinely over-sell (in our case, give away) tickets to their performances, knowing a certain percentage of folks won't attend for various reasons. The Elephant was spot-on in his previous post, and there is almost always seats available when the doors are open to non-ticket holders 5-10 minutes before the show.

Knoxville knext!

I got to see the band last night in Hickory, NC. WOW! The tuba quartet was worth the trip from the High Point area to Hickory. As a one hitch Navy MU, I was very proud of the excellent performance from one of the best bands in the world. I can only praise Captain Thompson on his leadership and ability to bring music to its fulfillment and to put together a concert that touched many of us in so many ways.
Along with me were several members of the Oasis Shriners Band from Charlotte and they were likewise very impressed and enjoyed the concert to its fullest.
Once again, I salute the US Navy Band and wish them "fair winds and following seas" as continue on thier Spring 2009 tour.

Morning from Knoxville.

Good concert last night. Staying in a nice place downtown. Ate a stupifyingly good breakfast at local legend Pete's Diner. Eggs, sausage, two incredible blueberry pancakes all served with a big helping of Southern Hospitality for less than $6 American.

Bus doesn't leave 'till 1200, so thought I'd throw a quintet rehearsal at 0900 and see if anyone comes after a special night where locally brewed soft drinks were dispensed at $2 per...

On to Nashville. Gonna look up Shania (then zoom to Memphis and see if BB needs a blues tuba player...). :tuba:

Karl,

I'm coming to the concert in Denton. I was wondering if I could bother you to tell Eric Moore, that James Wester is going to be at the Denton concert looking for him. :D He was the best man in my wedding and it has been too long since we have caught up. I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks,

James

I love reading Karl's posts. You can tell he's a tuba player, the main content of the reports is about food! I hear a visit to El Guapo is on the horizon.

But... I must say Karl had still kept his slim, petite silhouette as of last summer.

Consider it done, James. Eric and the whole Navy Band are looking forward to our concert in the Armadillo, on the grounds of my beloved alma mater (2x over!).

As soon as the tour bus crosses the Denton County line, Karl will be putting on his jeans, t-shirt, blue blazer and deck shoes. Once he puts the metadent in his mouth, he will be ready for Denton. But will Denton be ready for him?

Just off the bus (1430) in Birmingham. Broke Shania's heart that I had to leave Nashville so soon...

Did get to the the original Grand Ole Opry... well, truthfully just the lobby and gift shop as the concert hall is closed (for renovations?)

So Mr. Sloan, vas is das "Dreamland" you speak of? From our hotel there are so many dining choices: Whataburger (my first payin' money job), DQ (more popular with native Texans than McD's), Hooters (I hear the sweet tea is really good...).

I feel the need for more Tubenet input re: fine dining establishments for sea/home-sick sailors in need of refreshment. Common ladies and gentlemen, pony up!
