Re: 2009 COSMOPOLITAN TUBA EUPHONIUM WORKSHOP
How many usually attend? And, how many of these are "older" folks? I'm thinking seriously about doing something this summer that is totally for myself and totally musical, so this is a consideration.
Do all of the attendees play solo at the end. I wouldn't mind trying a solo, but the thought of it gives me heartburn.
This is almost the cost of an Alaskan Cruise....but not as cold.

Re: 2009 COSMOPOLITAN TUBA EUPHONIUM WORKSHOP
I have attended the last two years and will be attending again.
1. Yes you will play a solo of your choosing.
2. You will perform in a Tuba Quartet.
3. You will perform in a massed Tuba ensemble.
4. You will have FUN!
Last year there were 16 Tubists and 8 Euphists. The ages ranged from about 15 to 73. There were perhaps 4 or 5 of us (including myself) in the 50+ age range and the rest were split up between high school and college students. None of the students were in the younger adult 25 - 50 age range. I think those are the years where folks are too busy to go to music camps! However, last year, in addition to Mike Milnarik and Roland Froescher, we had Adam Frey, Jamie Lipton, Sanae Kanda, Matt Brown, Patrick Nyren, and Mary MacKinnon on staff or as guest artists. So when staff and students are taken into account, there is an adequate representation of all agre ranges.
I have found the social interaction to be terrific. The youngsters have been quite mature and the old guys (like me) sem to know how to have fun and communicate across the age ranges. I cannot imagine a nicer environment.

Thank you Doug. That answers it for me. The camp is quite enticing, however, I'm not sure if I could get there from here. I live in Northern Alabama. This will take some thought.

Re: 2009 COSMOPOLITAN TUBA EUPHONIUM WORKSHOP
Helen,
My friend Doug described the Workshop very well. However, he left out one aspect: I was shocked, simply shocked to discover that many of the adult (over age 21 only) attendees consumed some beer and/or wine in the evening. This led to conviviality and even laughter, which I'm sure you know is inconsistent with the stern seriousness of tuba and euphonium players. Be warned!
Seriously, do come if you can -- it's a great time! And, if you're nervous about doing your solo with piano, any of us who have attended before can discuss it and perhaps offer some tips. Remember, we're all in the same boat.
Cheers,
Allen Walker
