Doc, what instrument do you play on this?

I used to be that overly serious self righteous legit type, and then I discovered the depth that is found in some other types of music. This type of music that you play here is of course in the company of such virtuosos as Chet Atkins and other master pickers whom I have the utmost respect for. Yes, I do remember some tight-assed colleagues at world famous music schools scoffing at what they had no idea about.

That's a good question. Tubas were first knocked out of popular music about 1929 or 1930 because of the introduction of sensitive electronic microphones. Tubas had been used as rhythm instruments in the 1920s and before. If you want an idea of how the tuba sounded in this setting, listen to some old time radio programs from about 1935 and before.

One band leader, B.A. Rolfe, never believed in keeping up with the current. He kept a rhythmic tuba player until he retired sometime in the 1940s. You can hear his band on some of the Ripley's Believe It or Not broadcasts from the mid-1930s.

Here is a link to Ripley Retro Radio. The Lou Gehrig show is misdated 1932, it's possibly more likely 1936. In that year Lou was "pitching" for both Wheaties and Post Huskies, two almost identical cereals.

Rolfe's successor was Ozzie Nelson and his wife, Harriet Hilliard, was the girl singer. On one of the shows in 1936, Harriet didn't appear because she was in the hospital giving birth to son David (Ricky's older brother).

Speaking of Shameless Self Promotion.....

The Fredonia Jazz Ensemble recently finished recording an album, the first time since the early 90's. I play 3rd bone on it, and we have been told it is an Outstanding album. Trombonist Phil Sims, and Saxophonist Bruce Johnston are features as soloists on 2 tracks.

Release date is within the next few months, not sure of the exact date
