Giving up TubeNet for Lent

Yep, you heard it here...
Starting a few days late, BUT
I have decided to give up TubeNet for Lent.
(Even though my denomination doesn't technically require observation of Lent.)
TubeNet is one of my few, if only, social indulgences.

I will make one exception, but this is for "business" and not personal or social reasons - I will be playing the first movement of the Vaughan Williams with the Vanderbilt Community Concert Band in early April at a band festival, and I will post accordingly as the time nears.

And, if you are thinking about the music ed, music business, or music performance programs at Trevecca in Nashville, feel free to PM me. One of their tubists is going on a recording studio internship, and the other tubist is student-teaching, so I actually don't have any students there this semster.

I guess I will have to spend my TubeNet time working, practicing, and studying instead. wow.

Ah, a believer! True, lenten is a Catholic addition, but still a good thing to practice.

My wife and I have practiced some form of lent for several years. As Dylan mentioned, it is not in the Bible but we certainly feel no obligation to do it. Our reasons lie around the notion of sacrificing something in our lives to 1. break a bad habit that detracts from our relationship with God and 2. plays a significant enough role in our lives that removal of that particular element is truly a sacrifice (which brings about deeper reflection on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (For me, Tubenet does not fit into either category but I can understand why Marty chose to give up Tubenet for lent.)

The number of times that either of us have been in a Catholic church can be counted on one hand so I have no idea if our concept of lent aligns with Catholicism. What I do know, is that it's a tradition we look forward to each year.

So far, so good. I had to institute blocks at both home and work - out of habit I clicked on TubeNet my first Monday morning. I did just post about Trevecca openings, since it looks like we don't yet have any tuba applications this year, and I will post about my upcoming RVW concerto soon.

The thing that surprised me the most about giving up TubeNet was just how much I had become friends with many of the posters on here, and how I missed interacting with them on a regular basis. Once you get past the superficial rants and raves, TubeNetters really are a great buch of people and I am proud to know them all.

How very true! I think that is one of the reasons I come here. I am certainly quite satisfied with the tubas I already have, so am not looking for advice, or inspiration on that front. The musical discussion threads are now of more interest to me and just keeping up with 'friends'.

Only a few more weeks to go til I see all my TubeNet friends again!
