Looking for opinions regarding mute choice for a BAT?
I have a Balu regular mute which I like very much (as much as you can like a mute) so I'm thinking of the XL version in the first instance.
However I like the looks of the Schlipfinger range (particularly the combi mute) and I think he now does a BAT-sized mute. Anyone know whether this is straight/cup? Anyone played one?? I'd fully expect to pay the price of a small bank-bailout to get one so that'd be a factor...
I used to own a Trumcor Stealth practice mute for my old Neptune but never got along with it. Do folks find the Trumcor straight mutes ok?
Thanks!

Re: Mute for BAT
I use a Schlipf mute on my "Baer" and it's fantastic. Yes they're expensive, but they are really excellent. It is a straight mute that can have a cup added to it.

Re: Mute for BAT
You use Mr Wick himself as a mute!?
Seriously, I've never been a big fan of the Wick mutes but you presumably like the results?
This would be the Wick straight Aluminium designed for the Boosey Bb's? I'm surprised it fits in a Yorkbruner - or has Wick got other mutes released I don't know about?
Cheers for the replies.

I have a Humes & Berg BAT straight mute in like-new condition. I'll sell it for $45 plus shipping. PM me if interested.

Speaking of the Schlipfinger mutes. Does anyone know where one can purchase one here in the states? Thanks for any info.

Lee Stofer Music Service is a (quite possibly the only) U.S. based dealer of Schlip mutes.J.Harris wrote:Speaking of the Schlipfinger mutes. Does anyone know where one can purchase one here in the states? Thanks for any info.
I ordered my Schlipf practice through Lee. He has compiled a list of which mutes fit which tubas, so give him a call with your make and model of tuba and he can let you know which mute is correct for your application along with its availability and price. Be warned that while Lee is great to work with, Schlipf mutes can take a long time to get because sometimes Herr Schlipfinger himself gets behind building mutes or is busy teaching or performing in Vienna.
