Senior Editor for a regional Cable TV studio [RCN], once get to play Tuba in a RCN Cable commercial
featuring Cubs 2nd baseman and Hall of Famer, Ryne Sandberg, the ad spot ran couple years ago in Chicago only.

Also taped Jim Rice in hi-def for our Boston market, since I'm a Red Sox fan, it was a blast to meet him!
Play Tuba in the Bethlehem Municipal Band, Sousaphone in the Allentown Hobo "almost" Marching Band,
and Contrabass Trombone in the Bethlehem area Moravian Trombone Choir [est 1754]

Well, if you're a semi-conductor, I guess that would place you in the Engineering/Science/Tech category.David Richoux wrote:

Thanks for the responses, all. I do find it very interesting that the above referenced category has more than double any other. What, if anything, does that say about us?

Keeping focused on what's truly important in the long run, rather than what's easy or glamorous in the short term = not attractive to chicks.
Thus, those who were not consumed by their math class focused on attracting chicks. They played trumpet, drums, or guitar.

Now that would make an interesting poll. Not about to start it, though. (I fall in the same category.)Rick Denney wrote: Rick "who married late in life" Denney

I believe it says as amateur musicians we have more disposable income to indulge in musical instruments for the fun of it. And like to talk about those instruments. Re: For Amateur, Non-students Only
It actually came to me back in 1978 while riding home on the local commuter rail line after a parade in San Francisco. When the train conductor came down the isle checking tickets I figured there had to be a Semiconductor for a train going through the "Silicon Valley..."circusboy wrote:Well, if you're a semi-conductor, I guess that would place you in the Engineering/Science/Tech category. :)David Richoux wrote:

I do tech support for a tax software company and I am the brass, marching and breathing instructor for a local marching band with about 250 students.

Not surprising at how the voting has gone so far
A lot of Engineers playing Brass in my area, what with big engineering schools like Lehigh Univ. and Lafayette College,
the former home of Bethlehem Steel and Mack Trucks,
and now lots of smaller high tech and manufactoring businesses, I guess it figures.
I am in TV Media, but the company I work for is a Cable/Phone/Internet firm,
so "Media with a minor in Telecommunications"

Re: For Amateur, Non-students Only
It isn't a surprise that a large number of us are in the technology field. I'm not sure I would attribute it to Rick's explanation, but there does seem to be a relationship between mathematical ability and music and there is a relationship between mathematical ability and people entering technology related fields.
I used to be an IT director, but am now an adjunct professor of information systems, working on becoming an assistant professor of IS this Fall. I put myself in the education category, but could just have easily answered technology.
(By the way Rick I was married at age 23 even with an engineering degree.)

Re: For Amateur, Non-students Only
All this reminds me of a true story my stepfather tells when he still lived on the east coast decades ago before he moved to the midwest, where he met my mother after my father died. He was playing golf at his club one day with one of the (then) younger duPont's. The caddy was just a little too gabby and asked, "Now, Mr. duPont, I sees you out here ev'ry day playing golf -- just what do you do for a living?" To which the irritated Mr. duPont replied, "I work for my Daddy." Which begged the question from the caddy, "And, Mr. duPont, just what does your Daddy do?" The set up was perfect. The reply: "Nothin'."

There is a similar post going on over on my moorsickle forum...Unofficially, a 3:1 ratio of engineers to everything else. Four admitted cops, some active duty military, lots of computer/IT related, couple in the medical field, one guy who works on the oil pipeline in AK.

On further thought, this certainly isn't a scientific poll. Who is most likely to respond to a poll such as this here? Well, I'd think computer geeks of one type or another. Shouldn't be a big surprise that there are a lot of computer geeks who happen to play amateur tuba hanging around here

I play for fun, and money occasionally. As far as a career goes, I am fortunate enough to have my dream job. I'm a classical radio host. I am also breaking into my other dream job, as a professional voice over talent.

I'm in the army going to korea in august. I'm hoping to transition to be a bandsman while I'm there. I submitted a recording of the hindemith sonata mvt. 1 and they liked it, so now I'm just waiting for a slot to open.
