I can't find the page where it says it will no longer be free. The full version has a 30 day limit but the free version is still free: http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-v ... ee-edition

AVG free has found several things that Norton couldn't/didn't, on PCs of friends and family. yes, the FREE version. The pay version just gives a few more bells and whistles. And, AVG plays well with Spybot S&D and AdAware.

Comcast ISP customers can get McAfee for free.

Avast. Been using for last year without problems. Sits in the background trouble free and I see every day or two automatically downloads updates.

I agree! I've been using avast! free version for about three years without any complaints. Before that I used McAfee... but as Schlep said, they're not as good as they used to be. The last good/stable version of McAfee in my opinion was ver. 7

If you decide on trying avast, there's also a free help forum for folks with questions or problems:

About every 6 mos. or so AVG issues a +.5 version upgrade and AVG tells you about it by popping up a box with an embedded link to their website. Guaranteed you are going to have to hunt like H311 to find the free version from there. I ALWAYS give up in frustration and google 'AVG free download' or some such in order to come up with the free upgrade version download site. CNET is the site where I prefer to download AVG Free because they don't try to capture my demographics and email address prior to downloading, and they don't try to sell me something that's free.

AVG Free also comes with other annoyances. You have to run a complete scan whenever you do so, and if you surf, you'll want to run a daily scan. After installation/upgrade the default time for the complete scan is 12:00PM which is noon by my reckoning. I always set the scan to 2 or 3 AM in order to be sure the computer will be idle when it runs. AVG frequently 'fails' its updates, particularly around noon to 3 GMT, so you have to keep trying until it succeeds. Lastly AVG will from time require a reboot after one of its updates.

I understand why AVG wants to entice/lure people to buy their commercial products and why they don't want to make 'free' easy, so I play their game. I'm frugal and I hate subscription software.

I use McAfee since my parents Internet comes with a free subscription for several computers.
I think I might end up as a grumpy old man when I get old...
