Donn, my older Cerveny (first page of the thread, I think..maybe second) and yours are really similar, they sure stayed with a good design. The bracing is almost identical. Yeah, the oval shape is great until an outdoor gig comes up in December. I don't quite fit it well with a heavy coat, it's more comfortable to play left-handed than right!

Yes, I kind of like being a maverick

My reasons for going the route I have are three fold - the greater reliability of rotary valves (after having got fed up with sticking pistons), the better ergonomics (which became important following an injury) and the wider tonal pallet offered.

From the look of the chair you are on, are you a elementary school teacher
If you are, do you play for the children in your classroom on the tuba
What do they think about the size and sound of the tuba you play
Do you get lots of questions about the tuba
Most elementary school teachers play piano.

As part of the Scottish Cultural Society, I use to play bagpipes at Chicago public schools as part of the SCS's cultural music program.
I always had a very good time playing for the kids and entertaining the questions they had.
Some of the kids ask some amazing questions.
I think it would be outstanding for kids to have teachers with other music skills than what is normally traditional.
It creates a whole new way of being musically creative.

Actually, this picture was taken at a church where my University Wind Orchestra was having a concert. I'm not sure where the tiny chair came from, but the consensus with the group was that I needed a picture with the tuba sitting on it!!

However, my mom's a kindergarten teacher, and whenever I've back from school, I usually go to her classroom (and the surrounding ones as soon as they hear me!) and play for her students. They're always floored by the size of the instrument, and I've put together a little program for them about the tuba. We play name that tune with age-appropriate songs, talk about the differences between the brass instruments, that sort of thing. One part I really like is to bring a tape measure, and have a student take one end and walk to show how long a trumpet measures stretched out, a trombone... then the tuba. It's a great visual tool for them. Sometimes I bring along a couple of extra mouthpieces and let them practice buzzing with me. It's so much fun!
