I'm still getting used to my 188. The sound seems not to carry and not very full from the players' point of view. The impression in the hall is totally different. The recording of last concert scared me actually. When I thought forte it was actually fortissomo . At some moments I totally buried the basstrombone . I promised myself to back-off more in order to keep thing tastefull People told me afterwards they could hear me very well**, it sounded better than my 1291 BBb (which sounds very full from the players' point of view).

BTW, I really like the clarity, efficiency and intonation!



** the concert hall is very 'difficult' because it's mostly dry and it kind of muffles the sound. Not a tuba - friendly hall. BTW large Bessons (BBb) are somehow allways heard, just don't like the monotomous (sp?), woofy, foggy sound.

I'm endlessly curious about the re-release of the Miraphone 190. I really like the 188, and an easily playable "bigger brother" to it is intriguing!

Ok, my recollection was somewhere close to the BIG 5/4 Rudy's that the Marine Band used to have. Not Miraphone's best effort, hopefully the new one has the kinks worked out from back then.

I could never tell (even with pictures) how big the 190's actually are. The 188 is always a little smaller than I think it is.

The 190 Bell fits right into a 6/4 Holton/York bell ferrule with no trimming.

There are some tubas that just project like crazy, regardless of hall. The 188 seems to fall into that category.

Once in college we were playing the "Organ Symphony" with a great organ player. There is that one lick in the final movement that is unison with the bass trombone and organ. Two six note phrases. The first one starts on low Bb, then the next low C. Anyhow, I was told that the only thing audible was the tuba part. And all three of us were "blowing" at full tilt. A very easy tuba to play loudly, especially in the low register.

I don't really mind that, at least I know I am getting aout and "reaching them" my director told me that I could vibrate the upstairs backrow pews. . I like that.
FWIW I was using a stock 188 with a latest generation Sellmansberger Solo (blokepiece).
