The Harvey Phillips Holton
is a very good horn. It packs a punch in its small stature with a very nice sound and well thought out design. Harvey designed the instrument so that you could overcome any peceived disadvantage of a 4 valve instrument by making the 4th slide a double pull slide, able to lower the valve a whole step. To set it up you set the 4th slide from G down to F and use it only in the low register. You play the low C 1&3 and the low B 12&3, pulling the 1st slide to get it tuned. Using the 4th valve this way turns it into a quasi compensating horn in the low register and able to play the low Db quite easily.
Valves 1, 3 and 4 are vented from the factory which helps it slur quite nicely and it has a wonderful full, dark sound that will carry further than you think.
I would recommend that you at least try it. Looks can be deceiving.

ooooops....
My bad - I've been play testing too many BBb horns lately and my thinking is confused. Yes the D should be played 1&3 and the Db 12&3.
Sorry.
Sorry.
