Thanks for the advice. However I have spent considerable time in 2 different libraries. I have not only analyzed the piece and listened to many recordings, I have preformed the piece. I am currently reading books on VW himself and tuba lit. / dev. What I was hopping to get was help in what resources to look at because I am not satisfied with what I have gotten to this point.

I cannot find out anything on Philip Catelinet. The only information I have found listed his name as the first performer “du!!â€

I do not know much about Phil, but I do know he grew up as a Salvation Army tuba player in the band, and he has written a few pieces in the Salvation Army repertoire. I too have grown up with the Army, and I would recommend going to your local Salvation Army Corps and ask the Officer there where you can start. They should really be able to help you, or at least point you in the right direction. Hope this helps!

Skip Gray wrote a lengthy article on the VW concerto in the TUBA journal a few years back. There is also a good writeup in Gary Bird's 'Program Note for the Solo Tuba' including commentary by Catalinet himself.

...I am convinced that I have one of the very few unedited copies of the original manuscript (solo tuba part hand-copied from the manuscript orchestra score).

I find this original manuscript notion very intriguing -- didn't know of its existence; is there a way that you could make a copy available to those of us interested in the original? I’d be willing to pay for copying and postal fees. Please let us know; it could be of great interest to some of the “Tubenetters.â€
