I have a small Korg tuner with a cheapie pickup mic that I carry in my junk bag.
I also use the Peterson Virtual (Stobe Audio, Metronome) tuner, which I read about on Tubenet. I take it to inside and outside performances where I will be the only tuba player, and I feel responsible to set a good bottom end. [Corrected sentence.] The orchestra tunes to A, and bands to Bb and sometimes F also, all three pitches which, of course, use at least one valve on CC (1, 1-2, or 3). I need to pull first to get in tune with F, and push first in for Bb. So, the tuning slide, which is very short, needs a good starting point, for which I use the tuner. My ears have not been well-trained to distinguish pitch nuances, so I need that assistance to get me in the ballpark.
