Salisbury Vespers World Premiere -23rd May

Post by Wyvern »

My regular orchestra, Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, together with various other groups including the cathedral choir will be giving the world première of Salisbury Vespers by Bob Chilcott in Salisbury Cathedral at 7:30pm on Saturday 23rd May.

It is a big work and for the première is being performed by two orchestras (both formed by SSO) and multiple choirs - but the work is cleverly written so it can be performed by just one orchestra and choir in the future. For the première, both orchestras are identical, except only 'orchestra 1' will have tuba - so my part is the only one not doubled. I don't know why - I want to ask the composer when we see him. The tuba part is quite good throughout the piece and one movement is written for just brass, organ and percussion.

We had our first rehearsal yesterday and it seems a nice work which reminds me of John Rutter in style, although in itself quite distinctive. So it may well become established in the repertoire.

Anyway, it will be nice to see you if any TubeNeters make it to Salisbury Cathedral. If you are intending to come, get ticket/s soon, as it is rapidly selling out.
