- Is anyone required to learn about stuff like this today in American History classes, or is there not enough time left over after studying Oprah and basketball idols? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teapot_Dome_scandal

- Compared to business-as-usual today, this is *really* small potatoes, isn't it?
I studied that in my 11th grade AP American History class about 6 years ago. We didn't cover that as much as we did the "Guilded Age" stuff but we did cover the Teapot Dome Scandal.

The age of Guilds? Surely you jest…
Nay, I hope you jest...lol

Maybe it's called different things across the country but that's what our textbook and teacher both called it.

Ha ha ha...

I actually made the embarrassing mistake of calling it the Gelded Age. Yeah, it sure was a barrel of laughs for all.

Nay, grasshopper, you misread the spelling of the word and folded its definition into another word all together!

It is the Gilded Age, not Guilded Age. 8)

A guild is a group of people formed around a common interest. Gilding is like very thin (cheap) gold plating. A golden age is a great time to be alive. A gilded one looks that way but really is not so great.

From our friends at Merriam-Webster:

gild: to overlay with or as if with a thin covering of gold

guild: an association of people with similar interests or pursuits ; especially : a medieval association of merchants or craftsmen

I was teasing you for your rather funny typo. But it was not a typo after all, just the wrong word altogether. Now you have clarity, grasshopper! You win a gilded tuba from the Tuba Guild!
Hahaha...gotcha! I guess I just assumed there was only 1 spelling...that's what I get for assuming (and English being a very confusing language). I do need some gilding for my raw brass horn though!

You know what they say when you assume......
