Oops - Rosza did indeed write some really great scores; though a bit corny at times "Ben Hur" is very powerful stuff. He did a particularly neat job on one of his last movies as well, one rarely seen these days - "Time After Time."

Glad to see fellow CCM alum (well, almost-alum - he left early) Randy Edelman get mention in this thread. Much deserved.

Bruce Broughton did a really nice job on a cartoon as well as on Silverado - it was called "The Rescuers Down Under." My kids liked that one a lot when they were little; the score osmosed right into me.

Been listening to the remastered Poltergeist lately. Tommy Johnson and Jim Self on Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-nominated score, tubas *very* hot in the mix, sounds awesome.

A particular favorite of mine is Star Trek: The Movie. The soundtrack was by Jerry Goldsmith, and Jim Self and Tommy Johnson played on it. They both played F and CC tubas, according to an earlier post on the subject by Mr. Self. There was a LOT of tuba in the recording.

"Gladiator" by Hanz Zimmerman...by far my favorite

I like pretty much any of John Williams' soundtracks (including the "not so big" movies).

Oh, and you can't go wrong with the "SpaceJam" soundtrack!!!

Most anything John Williams, especially Star Wars. He may have used ideas from other composers (http://www.trell.org/wagner/starwars.html" target="_blank), but he certainly did a good job of it.

What about the Jabba the Hutt theme? (Which was unfortuneately cut)

Batman (1989) had a good soundtrack. The soundtrack to Charlie and the Chocolate factory wasn't bad either. (Both were Danny Elfman soundtracks.)

I already posted in this thread, but nobody's mentioned "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" so I will. There you go.

Korngold's music, both for Hollywood and for the concert stage, needs much more exposure. There is so much beautiful, expressive music in his catalog. None of his scores are over-programmed.

I can't think of one John Williams film score that misses the mark. It's some of the most memorable music of any genre in the 20th/21st centuries. What's also remarkable is the breadth of flavor with which he is capable of painting the aural/musical picture. Think of the vast difference between the scores for Star Wars and Schindler's List, for instance.

Would we all like Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible as much as we do if they didn't have such a prominent tuba part? Perhaps. Certainly those are two of the most accessible scores that Prokofieff wrote. There are singable/hummable tunes in them. A lot of his music not composed for the cinema is much more acerbic and dissonant (which doesn't make it bad music, BTW).

As one who loves the music of Leonard Bernstein, it's a shame that his only film score is the excellent On the Waterfront (his musicals don't count in this thread)......OK, before someone else mentions it, the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story is a cool score (pun intended).

I love Rachel Portman's scores, particularly Chocolat.

My favorite John Williams score is The Terminal, although I like a lot of his work, even if others find it too commercial.

Others that I listen to regularly are:

I think the score from the Lord of the Rings trilogy is some of the best writing I've ever heard... surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

If you like Rachel Portman's work, you might also want to check out Road to Wellville:

Never saw the movie, but based on the music and dialogue on the CD, it sounds quite broad. Some funny small ensemble tunes in there with very exposed tuba playing. I enjoy listening to it.

The Incredibles, Hellboy I and II, and Sweeney Todd.

Anything with good brass is okay in my books, as well as creepy woodwinds haha.
