Mouthpiece Question

I am looking to get another mouthpiece in the future, and i have my eye on a perantucci mouthpiece in particular. Are they any good and what would be the right size for a YBB641. Thanks a bunch much appreciated!

Mouthpieces are something very individual to you according to your sound concept, how you play, what tuba you play, what sort of music you play and even the shape of your face.

A good dealer will be able to direct you to what MIGHT be the mouthpiece you require, but the only way to know what is right for you is to try for yourself!

Yes, Perantucci mouthpieces are good. I agree with Neptune, though. You need to try them out. Buying one sight unseen without playtesting them with your horn is going to be hit or miss. I don't think they carry Perantuccis, but why don't you plan a trip to Dillon Music and bring your horn. Try everything they have and find the one that works for you?

Matt @ Dillons can definitely give you a good recommendation for a PT.

But before you drop the cash, contact Jeff Rideout @ Custom Music. I had never played a PT before he came through on his way back from a tuba convention in San Antonio and stopped at the local university for a couple of hours. Be absolutely frank with him how and what you currently play, and he can tell you exactly which PT will suit you best, whether out of the "American" series or the "German" series of their mouthpieces. Before meeting him, I shied away from them, as there are so many models and the descriptions don't really tell everthing. But after meeting him, I now have two: PT34 for the 186 for more solo-oriented stuff (like "Them Basses" and "E Pluribus Unum" march and anything with a high register) and a PT82 for the 38K for everything but the coldest weather.

One caution: don't get one with too small a throat, as they are mostly intended for F tuba, and the upper register can go flat on a contrabass, whether CC or BBb.
