Re: Need Help--Southern moving north!
Which part of Ohio? There is a huge difference between regions. North of Columbus, there will be large differences, South of Columbus...not so much.
in the south - drink = beverage of any kind
in Ohio - drink = alcoholic beverage
I almost never hear anyone using the term "pop" anymore. The only place I see it now is on shopping lists or as a generic term, e.g., "Pick up some pop for the party".
Chicks dig accents. Use it to your advantage.
Do not stand near the shores of Lake Erie during a winter storm. If you survive, you will wish you were dead. It will redefine your meaning of cold. I know there are places that are colder, but for a southerner, this will be a new experience.
Before you visit Cleveland, watch both of these videos:

Ok...those were just to be funny....here's the real one:

I'll add other tips as I think of them.

If it's Oxford, ensure that your car has good brakes and tires. The hills that surround the beautiful campus are treacherous in the snow! Also, if you're moving to Ohio, spelling Cincinnati correctly should be at the top of your list...
It's cold here, but not too cold. Snow is hit or miss. There is usually one "large" (12 inches or so) snowstorm annually. I've found Ohioans and the midwest in general to be some of the warmest, most friendly people I've ever met. Mind you, I moved from Philly... the city known for its "brotherly love".

Re: Need Help--Southern moving north!
I've lived in Southern-Indiana most of my life and I've NEVER called soft drinks 'pop'. I think you'll find that the entire population of the US is from regions other than where they live. There don't seem to be as many regional cliches and accents as there used to be. I was in Texas for three weeks in April and didn't run into a single person who spoke like John Wayne.
As for Ohio.... remember that the state symbol is the 'buckeye'.... a worthless nut!

Which is why it's a wortless mascot, on the order of the Zip and the Golden Flash. Our state's institutions of higher learning have much stronger mascots including Red(skins)hawks, Bobcats, and, of course, the mighty, graceful Falcon.TubaTinker wrote:As for Ohio.... remember that the state symbol is the 'buckeye'.... a worthless nut!

From the Texans I've met before, I'd say to stick to your guns and don't change a damn thing. (<-- That's meant as a good thing.

So, where will you be? Which U.? People/places/weather/things/stuff can be very different in Ohio based upon your geographic location.tubashaman2 wrote:ohio

Congratulations!tubashaman2 wrote:I was offered a last minute assistantship at Miami U in Oxford Ohio, but I have met people online in other places throughout. Any assistantship is better than no assistantship, and Prof. Olt is well respected and an amazing player/teacher, so I assume this will help my tuba playing while saving me money
All that I've heard about Prof. Olt is glowing. He came in to BG after Ms. Brown left for PSU, but I never had a chance to study with him.
Miami, however...ehhh.....

Good luck to you. Greater Cincinnati has lots to offer, including many sausages, a perennially terrible professional (sic) football team, and a delicious (albeit VERY different from traditional) chili.
I can't say much about what to do or where to go in Oxford, because I would go straight to Yaeger, Yost, or Millet, and get straight out of town afterward.

Are you going to leave us wondering which school you mean?? (kidding)tubashaman2 wrote: I was involved in a discussion with someone about a school with a very old and a very big amazing tuba ensemble, where the other aspects of music maybe are not the highest, but the teacher there is amazing.

I'm sorry if you think that I was poo-pooing Miami U.'s music department or marginalizing your accomplishmens. I know that some very good things go on there. I was being superficial re: what we Bowling Green folk refer to as The Miami Whammy. I'm sure that you'll do great things there and it'll be a fine experience on what I know to be a lovely campus.tubashaman2 wrote:Plus there are 10 symphonys within 2 hours, including Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Columbus, and in a days drive Chicago, Phili, Cleveland.
Who knows if Columbus will be around by the time you're done with school. Severance Hall is far less than a day's drive. It'll take you 3.5 to 4 hours dependent upon traffic and your personal driving habits. Blossom (the Orchestra's summer venue) is even closer. Don't forget to check out Canton, Akron, and Wheeling...three very good non full time regional orchestras.

If you do get to Columbus, try to take in a concert of the Columbus Brass Band, an exceptional group as I recall, and possibly the Columbus Concert Band. Also go to an OSU football game--no, not for the sport, for the OSU Marching Band (10 musical drummers and 110 frustrated plumbers!).
Near Columbus, Newark has some interesting native american mounds.
All through the state there are preserved pieces of the old canals with several museums.
Cleveland is a depressed area now, but has some excellent museums, a surrounding park system, and many polka bands! The Rock and Roll museum has some interesting architecture and the Indians BB stadium also rocks (even if the team doesn't these days.)

I hope this study was paid for with our tax dollars. I can't think of any better use for my hard-earned money.djwesp wrote:

When I was stationed in Scotland back in the 60's, I was amused to hear that the 'Blokes' called about any flavored non-alcoholic drink LEMONADE. A mix of beer and 'lemonade' was called 'chandy'.... maybe still is.
