Quick question for all you Romantic music connoisseurs: Is there a particular rendition of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique that is considered to be the "definitive" recording? I heard several movements of the piece performed recently and want to pick up a recording of the full symphony, but don't know which orchestra did it "best," if such a term applies. Thanks in advance.

Define definitive. Is it the most authentic one, that uses the most out of tune original awfulclydes they could find? Is it the Pokorny / Mendoker one with the 2nd tuba down two octaves in the Dies Irae? Is it the Deck one or the Jacobs one where they blow the mics off the stage?

My personal favourite is the Gergiev/Vienna Phil. The tubas (F?) sound really sinister!

I guess I meant the one most people would refer to if they were talking about the piece. If you were examining the nuances of this symphony, which recording would you use as the "best example" overall?
