Mpc for Yamaha 822 F

Post by MikeMilnarik »

Hello Everyone,

I've been playing on a Bobo Solo for quite a long time now. I like it in many ways and in other ways - I'd like to check out something different.

So for the 822 players out there ... What mouthpiece do you use?

Thanks!

Try the Yamaha Self as a great all-arounder on this horn.

I have been using a PT-64 mouthpiece for about a year now and it seems to me like a perfect match!

I will get stoned for this... I most often used the mouthpiece that came from the factory, the Yamaha 67C4 (I think I have it right).

However, it is a versital instrument and works well with a lot of mouthpieces. I've used (and seen others use) a Monette 94 (not the F tuba mouthpiece), Conn 2 and Helleberg 7B. A friend uses the PT 65.

You want a mouthpiece that doesn't screw up the basically good intonation; the high register can go flat with the wrong mouthpiece.

Running for cover now.

Oh God! This problem was mine a couple years ago. You could probably search for those posts, but here's what I figured-out:

PT64 - Works great. Wonderful and easy low register and a great option for when you want to sound just a little tighter (in comparison to the rest listed that is). Very focused sound. I used it once in quintet but found the other options below were better suited for 5tet for me. Good choice for most orchestral rep. I always keep this one in the case for when I really need to sound like an F tuba!

Yamaha Bobo Solo - THE mouthpiece for this horn for me. With this one I play almost everything. I have the flexibility to sound as big or small as I want and can really darken up my tone when needs be. The low register is comfortable as is the high. Very good all-purpose mouthpiece for me despite the label 'solo'. I use it for 90% of my playing on the 822.

Stock MPC that came with horn (I think it's a 67B4 but I don't have it with me) - Great mouthpiece and it works almost as well as the Bobo for me. When I bought my 822 it was primarily for 5tet usage but it took a couple months for me to feel 100% on the new horn. The mpc that came with the 822 found its way into my Nirschl 4/4 and POW! I had a quintet horn! While the Nirschl is already a sweet axe for 5tet, it really, really lightened it up for the interim before I replaced it with the 822. It's a good option for the 822, of course, but with the Bobo Solo and the PT-64 in my case at all times, I have what I need.

Your results might vary, but after I did all of my own research, I compared findings with a couple of other YFB-822 players whom I respect a great deal. I was SO pleased to find that they use the same equipment after similar searches of their own. What a fluke!

I hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for their replies! This all helps!

I've been using the Bobo solo for years. I love the sound I get with it, but for some reason I'm feeling less and less comfortable on it. A colleague of mine has been saying the same thing. We've both been a little less than satisfied with the feel of the mouthpiece. Of course this boils down to personal preference. So I figured that I would see what others have come up with in case there is an alternative. The Bobo Solo was actually designed with the 822 in mind, so it makes sense that it works in many ways, but I'm ready to explore a bit.

I've heard people mention the PT-64 also. Gonna get my hands on one and see how I feel on that.

Again, thank you to everyone who replied. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts.

I did quite of bit of searching and a fair bit of trial and error testing over a number of years to find what worked for me on this instrument.

For me, the Bobo just didn’t feel right, and as a result I kept looking and trying. Three mouthpieces that you may wish to check (and they all work very well for me):

[1] PT – 64
For decades this was my only F mouthpiece that I would use. Still like it for many, many things – particulalry solo stuff.

[2] Blokepiece (the original)
I REALLY like what this piece does with this horn*; I also use it with my B&S F as well. I now consider this to be my “default” mp with the Yamaha F (and for vast majority of things on the other F as well).
[*and actually, I like it with whatever horn I plug it into -- including my Hirsbrunner CC]

[3] G&W Baer F (original design)
For me, it was a good fit in both sound and comfort. (Great, but then along came the Blokepiece.)

It is a mouthpiece designed by Joe Selmansberger, made by Houser.

After trying quite a few mouthpieces, I settled on a modified Laskey 30F. I don't like rounded rims, so I flattened the rim, and the change was remarkable. It has a lot of Helleberg sound in the low range, and a clear, focused high range.

Mouthpieces, like suits, don't always fit right off the rack.
