Besson 700 neck/leadpipe doesn't fit

Post by bobsacks »

Hi
I've been playing my new/old beat up Meinl Weston for a few weeks now and I've really fallen in love with playing the tuba.
No matter how hard I practiced I just couldn't get very good on the trumpet but I feel like I can really get into this instrument. :D
I even brought it into my gig and did some blues tunes with it :tuba:

Anyway , the Besson 700 arrived yesterday. I got it for less then the MW and it's in great shape except I think it may have the wrong neck.
Here is the auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 4196wt_942" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank
There are lots of pics.
Can somebody help me with what it needs?
Thanks for any help

Thanks Bloke
The neck fits but in a very bizarre way
Is it possible that it had two necks, one for marching and one for sitting?
I'm looking all over and not even finding any pics of how it's supposed to fit?

Looks like I'm missing the concert neck/leadpipe
I see a for sale section here. Is that the place to put up a parts wanted post?

I called a few shops here in the Bay Area and was told that I can't get the part anymore new and that it would be really, really .. really hard to try and find a comparable new one that would work from another manufacturer .

I don't know what it would cost to get a used/new neck or to try and convert the marching one. I paid $400 for it.
for $600 I could've gotten a Yamaha YBB105 so spending more then $300 would probably not be smart. Of course if I can return it I'll be out the shipping.

Suggestions anyone

Repair people like Harvey of HHH, but also others, buy dubious instruments on the web because they can see the business potentials in bringing these instrument in a playable condition. They may fail once in a while, but they apparently come out on top in the long run. They have parts stocked or know where to get them. In some cases they make the parts themselves.

I am not a repairman at all, so I strive to avoid any instruments, where sellers mention potential problems for which I am not positive about having a solution readily available.

With just about all non-jumbo Conn sousaphones between WWI and the UMI era you can be sure they had the same size of neck and bits, which still are made. Conn now has two neck sizes, both available. With some other discontinued brands you still can have accessories like necks and bits, with others you can’t. Check out before buying.

The tuba model in question never was big in the market and it isn’t made any more. When the seller mentions problems with the neck, then this is a stay away from item no matter its other potential qualities.

In your situation I would ask a local repairman whether he can put a nickel silver sleeve on the tenon. If he doesn’t like that idea, then return the tuba.
