metronome recommendation?

My wife the flute player wants a new metronome. Constraints are:

a) portable (fits in a flute bag, and on a music stand)
b) loud
c) has controls that are visible while wearing glasses optimized for 1 meter ("music glasses").

The last one is the toughie for those of us whose arms have been shrinking lately.

No need for anything fancy. In fact, the ideal device would allow you to tap out a tempo and then just keep it going.

I don't own one but have used them before. My vote is for a Dr. Beat. It will be the last metronome/beat machine that you or Christine will ever need.

It is portable, loud, subdivides, allows you to calculate tempo by tapping a button and a bunch of other bells and whistles.

Dr Beat is good for helping ensembles. The "Tempo Nazi" setting (uses a shrewish female voice to call out the tempo) is particularly effective with married men.

By the way, I'm looking for something that combines metronome and pitchpipe functions and has an earphone plug. Plus is easy for an ignorant Luddite (me) to use. Any suggestions? Is the Korg an answer for me as well?

My Boss DB-30 normally lives on my music stand, but it's small and portable. Highly recommended.

I also have the Tempo app for the iPhone, and it is a very good metronome...I use it at work from time to time, if my other metronome isn't around. I will probably be getting the Peterson StroboSoft strobe tuner app for the iPhone, which, for $10, seems like the best tuner available.

For a metronome device (not software for a phone), I also reccomend the Korg MA-30. I have used in and the matching tuner for years, until I recently bought the Korg TM-40, which is the metronome and tuner combined into one *slightly* larger product. Very convenient, and does everything you want (plus has a fully chromatic tuner!)

I second the TM-40 - the tuner seems to work better in my lower registers compared to even the CA-40. It's supposed to be the same electronics, but hey, my TM-40 picks up my pedal register but the CA-40 just doesn't.

In order of preference:

1) TM-40
2) Korg DB-30 (a small Dr. Beat with all the bells and whistles I ACTUALLY use)
3) MA-30

I have a DB-30 and a CA-40 in one case and a TM-40 in the other.
