PT6-P in trunk of a newer Civic Hybrid?

Post by rodmathews »

Anybody know if a PT6-P will fit in the trunk of a 2006 or newer Honda Civic Hybrid? Just thought I'd ask before I lug my tuba down to a Honda dealer. I'm considering buying a car in another city that I'd have to fly to, and I can't take my tuba along to test the fit.

Thanks!

I don't know if this helps you, but I have a 2006 Accord Coupe (2 door). The trunk is lower than the 4 door Accord Sedan. My Gnagey with the 19 in. bell just fits. My son's 56J with a 20 in. bell doesn't fit. Probably doen'st help you much.

I can see if anyone around here has a Civic. I know that all of my tubas with cases (Getzen CB50, York Eb, and Cerveny Kaiser) fit in the trunk of my Camry (94). If the trunks are similar size...then yeah. See if you can find someone in your city with a civic and ask to just stick it in their trunk for a minute (it's not that strange..when looking for my car, we took a Yamaha hard case to the dealers to see what it would fit in. Fit in Camrys of the 94 generation, but not the next gen. The one after that (2000's, i think), I think it fit pretty well, and the newest generation, I think it would fit).
I hope that helps (at least a bit)

I have trouble fitting my piggy in the trunk of the latest generation Honda Civic...2 and 4 door. Your tuba will probably be too tall..if not too large over all.

Hey Rod -

I would agree with previous posters about measuring the trunk etc. Heads up though: hybrids have large battery packs often placed between the rear seats and trunk. Most hybrids have much smaller trunks than their standard combustion cousins.

You should go back to the old red Civic hatchback - great mileage; definitely fits tubas.

Good luck with the purchase

Get a Fit! (not a Hybrid, but there is one in the works...)

It is like a Civic Minivan - tons of room if you fold the back seats down, but even with them up it has a massive trunk. I have carried 4 musicians, a sousaphone (no case,) trombone and double-bell euphonium (in case) and a large washboard in relatively good comfort in my Fit.

BTW, mine has been re-badged to what many other parts of the world call this car: JAZZ!

I have the Jazz from 2006. No big tuba gets in the trunk. No chance.
There's a possibility to fold down one single seat, and then you can load the biggest kaiser tuba. With 2 remaining seats in the back.
Only uses 6 litres of gas per 100km. (you'll figure out the miles per gallon yourself, wont' you?)
And cheaper, a lot!

I can see where that could be an issue with you Wade, but not everyone has to drive on Mississippi roads. Seriously, I once saw a semi's front wheels come completely off the ground on I20 between Vicksburg and Jackson. I was stuck beside him in the left lane, no where to go, and terrified. The driver just nonchalantly motored on with the steering up in the air 50% of the time. I don't ever have a problem even in my rough Explorer. Now if you are going up bloke's driveway you might need to be careful.

+1 for the Fit. My wife and I (..ahem...really the wife) just got a 2009 Fit in Blackberry Pearl. The thing is awesome. I don't think you can fit many tubas in the actual trunk, HOWEVER if you put down one or both of the back seats you can "Fit" even a large tuba. Now the trunk could be larger than I remember. I have no idea. I've only had the chance to drive it twice and I haven't really inspected it to much. I DO however pay the car loan. <sigh> Next time I get the new car!!!!

Now the Honda Element (my new...[was the wife's]...vehicle), that thing is much larger on the inside than it appears. With the seats out you could fit multiple 6/4 (ehhh...about 3) tubas with ease.

If I were you I would not buy a car until you test fit the tuba in it. If you buy the car and the tuba doesn't fit, you'll end up wasting a bunch of money.

I kinda doubt (but I do NOT know for a fact) that a PT-6 (with its 19 inch bell) will fit in the trunk of a Civic. I expect it to be pretty close. I believe that the trunk of a Civic hybrid is even smaller due the batteries. So if the PT-6 fits in the trunk of a Civic, it may not fit in the trunk of a Civic hybrid.

The biggest problems with sedans is the height of the trunk and trunk opening. It's often around 16 or 17 inches. Then 19 inch bell just might not fit.

Take your tuba to the nearest Honda dealer. Dress nicely, be polite. If you look like have money to spend, you'll get plenty of attention. The fact that you brought your tuba along should tell them that you're serious. Tell them that you're shopping for a new car and that your tuba needs to fit in any car that you might buy. Tell them you're interested most in a Civic hybrid. They will let you open the trunks of many different new cars to see if your tuba will fit. If for some reason they do not, another dealer will.

You may find that on your trip to the dealer that a different car will fit your tuba much better. Hatchbacks seem more tuba friendly than sedans. The Honda Fit is a hatchback. Maybe the Honda Insight is a hatchback as well?

Don't worry about buying a car from another dealer after visiting the first one. People come to a car dealership and leave without buying cars all the time.

The last time I was shopping for a car, I had a list of cars that were interesting to me. I took my tuba along while shopping and if the tuba didn't fit, I didn't even test drive the car. I did this at four dealerships. No salesperson denied my test fitting my tuba in the trunk. I disqualified several cars on my list that way.

I hope this helps,

Christian

The rear seats don't fold down in the Civic Hybrid. From a Civic Hybrid Owner/Operator 0% chance of getting a PT-6 in the trunk.

Thanks, everyone! I got another confirmation from a local guy that it won't work.

My choices of car are limited to two, really. I live in California, and we have this really handy law that allows certain hybrid vehicles into the carpool lane with only one occupant. It's VERY handy for those of us on the Freeway Philharmonic circuit. The state only issued about 85,000 of the permits, the last of which were issued in 2006. Only two cars qualified - the Prius and the Civic.

I currently drive a 2004 Prius hybrid with the carpool lane stickers, and I was thinking of changing to a 2006 Civic Hybrid - the newest model Civic one can buy with the carpool lane stickers. Looks like I'll be keeping the Prius.

Once the law expires, I'll be getting something much more comfortable for sitting in traffic. :-)

Oh, and Bloke, I can tell you without a doubt that a tuba won't fit in the trunk of a 2000 Corvette convertible. Ben, it was the same color red as the Civic I used to drive, but a hell of a lot louder!
