The only question bloke lets open for now is whether he was a secret agent for Breshny or for Ronnie.

As for ken’s rash againt the rush: if your are the tubist, you after all are the one setting the tempo at least in the first movement. If you play the baritone part you better learn your diminished arpeggios. They are there all the 3 of them within the very first staves of the part.

I seem to remember Ewald being an (amateur) cellist, who also played the tuba. As Russia was under German influence back then, tubawise, he likely played a small F tubas, not too hard to move around on.

Just for kicks I checked it against my ed. Dave Thomas set. With the exception of a moved rehearsal mark in II and a couple of insignificant unneccessary accidentals they are identical. How does one become an editor at $20 a pop? We are going to perform it next year so we might program it as "Original 19th Century Manuscript". Of course someone would ask, "Where's your Alto Horn?"
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Wouldn’t KGB or whatever US equivalent have taught at least one of your aliases, that that even old prints once were new and have legal references that are longer into work?

So I see on the cover that the date is 1912. Is this when the work was written or is that just a date of this edition? i always thought the work was written earlier than that.

There is some information (not entirely consistent with itself) available via Google. 1912 appears being the year of the first print of this quintet, which really is his second. No other quintets by Ewald were published during his lifetime (1860-1935).

Klaus, re-read Ken's post and think Russian.

The link worked for me, when I tried it again, yet I am aware that its structure is vulnerable due to the ( ). I made this altarnative link, which hopefully works:

I see! Ken was rushin’ past me. Who would ever have imagined that? I am on fast crutches.

Many thanks Klaus but your original link wasn't the problem.

I can open the page with the links to the PDF downloads but as soon as I get to the disclaimer page and accept the terms I hit a brick wall. No matter which way I get to this page I always get a server timeout/ could not connect message.

On investigating further on the site it seems that it's a UK based issue but not a consistent one.... Some people have no problems, others (like me) can't download anything from the site. Ho hum

If anyone out there would be kind enough to PM me any copies they've successfully downloaded I would be very grateful. If the music wasn't public domain I wouldn't ask but as it's out there I'd be really interested to see these historic pages.

Many thanks

Your problem puzzles me, as you should be within the same legal zone as me regarding copyright. Please email me your address via the button to the right, and I will send you the files.

Back again!

I can now download the files via a proxy site. It seems there is a UK specific glitch in the system & we're having to find workrounds to get anything from this site. It's a pity because they seem to have a lot of fascinating material there.

Many thanks for your efforts Klaus but I am in the process of saving this wonderful work to my computer.

Incidently I have to echo the earlier recommendation (Bloke?) for the PJBE recording of this piece. It's on their "Greatest Hits" compilation and should be required listening for anyone even vaguely interested in brass chamber music. If you've never heard Fletcher in full flight you'll be in for a treat!
