It's easy if it doesn't have to be perfect (like a lot of things, but in this case after all you're just going to eat it anyway), and it's a good thing with potentially soupy pies like cherry - or peach. I made a peach pie a couple days ago, with lattice top, after our peach tree brought forth a bountiful harvestbloke wrote: The lattice top (for a clumsy bloke) will be a challenge.

Sour cherries (e.g., Montmorency) make the best pie ever, but have only seen them fresh at farmers markets where they are terribly expensive, like $4 / lb. (Partly because they're harder to pick - for sale fresh, a pie cherry has to be picked stem and all, or it's likely to slip off the seed - which ironically is exactly what you will be doing to them later.) Anyway, without sugar and some flour or something, they make a sour and soupy pie, so in effect some sweet filler is necessary, but the trick is to not overdo it.

The best cherry pie I ever had was from "Bubby's Pie Company" in NYC. They make it with sour cherries, also...simply spectacular!

Seeing those peaches reminded me of my grandmother's open face peach pie. Easy to make and incredibly tasty. Add three tablespoons of flour to a cup of sugar, pour half of it into an uncooked pie crust, add 3 fresh peaches, halved, pour the rest of the sugar/flour mixture over the peaches, fill the pie pan with cream, and put into a hot oven(425 degrees). After 10 minutes turn it down to 325 and cook for an additional 50 minutes. Allow it to cool at room temp for an hour before serving, if you can stand it. Enjoy plain or with a scoop of vanila ice cream on top. BTW it's better if you don't peel the peaches.

I bought some cherries at Whole Foods a few weeks ago (a small bag, on sale, but usually something like $6.99/lb). Apparently people had been caught off-guard too often in the past by the price, because the cashier has to CONFIRM with you that you're buying $x.xx or $xx.xx worth of cherries.

We have to grow a special peach variety that defers most of its leaves until mid-summer, to work around peach leaf curl disease in our late, wet spring. They're nothing like the peaches you can grow in most of the rest of the country, but even a mediocre peach fresh off the tree can be pretty good. The tree is a little taller than I expected at this point, maybe 12 feet. Like any orchard tree from a nursery, it's a graft on a dwarfing rootstock - if the tree could grow on its own roots, would be much taller. Ours has been getting along without fertilizer.
I suppose I may turn up my nose at canned cherries, but once you have gone to the farmers market, and shelled out for fresh Montmorency sour cherries from the incredibly scenic eastern Washington area where your mother's family settled at the turn of the century, and made a pie from them that's so good you remember it for a long time afterwards ... well, there's lots of stuff you can make a pie out of.
For pie cherries, $6.99 / lb.? I could believe that - painful, but the surprise is that they have pie cherries at all. For sweet cherries, like Bing, Lambert etc., that would be pretty steep. (The sweet cherries I always look for at the farmers market are "Black Republicans" ... but I don't buy them, no one does. They're soft and don't really taste that good, the only value is the funny name.)

I have, for the past several days, been reading a book called, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." It is the Jane Austen classic novel, but with the occasional horde of zombies attacking. Someone actually found a way to make Jane Austen interesting and readable!!!

Since I drink neither alcohol nor caffeine, my beverage choices are limited if I go out somewhere. One of the first drinks I will request is ginger ale. Many restaurants do not offer ginger ale, but they will not tell you that. Their definition of "ginger ale" is mixing equal parts Coke and Sprite! This is neither caffeine free nor ginger ale. I have now learned to ask if they have "real ginger ale" first. I dunno, it's out here, just not easy to find. I grew up in MD, and had definitely heard of it. I never learned to appreciate it until recently though -- I thought it was some cheap knock-off or something. But it's very good. Canada Dry can stay north of the border.

She seems to be more worried about losing her future paycheck than her son's life. I hope she was just flustered by the moment and those are not her true feelings. In my limited experiences, I have found the fourth valve to be frozen on most school tubas (same goes for the second rotor on school bass trombones.)
