1) You are right to be concerned. Major nerve(s) are near the wisdom teeth.
2) I had tauri removed in June, I could do limited playing in two weeks, but it took 8 weeks to heal. It looks like a much bigger job than pulling teeth, but THERE WERE NO NERVES INVOLVED IN THAT SURGERY.
3) My internist told me I could have a MD do it, but he recommended that I use an oral surgeon since they do this kind of thing every day. Dr. Collin Bell (offices near Baylor Hospital, Dallas) did the work. Medicare paid for NONE of it so I paid for the entire job. Expensive!! necessary~!!!
4) Your case is entirely different since nerves are close to the site. A tubist friend of mine in his 30s had his wisdom teeth removed a month or two ago and is having nerve problems right now. Wisdom teeth LOOK like a more minor procedure, but due to the nerves, it is not. I do not believe he took any special precautions about selecting "the right" dentist. Full recovery may take some time, but it is expected
5) A large percentage of the tuba-playing population (including me, in my twenties) have had wisdom teeth pulled with no PERMANANT problems. But you need to avoid a temporary problem due to your scheduled playing obligations.
6) I would think this is not the 1st time your teachers have seen this problem with their students. Ask! One or more of them may have a recommendation. Ask everyone on the brass faculty
7) Do not put this off too long. It will not get better.
