G and W Mouthpieces (review/comments please)

Post by djwesp »

I'm looking to buy a new Eb and F mouthpiece, and stumbled upon the GW's.... very good price and seems like a decent philosophy on construction...

i was wondering the pros and cons of the two smaller mouthpieces they offer for Eb and F. the churada and the bora mouthpieces...

thanks

The Bora os hand down the best F tuba mouthpiece I have played. It beltys out the low notes and pedals, and has a solid upper register as well. The only thing that isn't perfect about the mouthpiece is the register above F above middle C. My Mirafone C4 can tap out the extreme high range better than the Bora can, but I think the smaller MP they sell would fix that problem.

I want to go for one of their titanium MP's, probably the Bayamo. I wonder what the differece is?

I can't recommend the Bora more, but if you are looking for a solo MP that can hit the high Bb in S. Fantastique, you may want to go one step smaller.

I use the Bora on my Eb horns and love it. It sounds great in the low and mid registers and doesn't limit my "high" range at all (only up to E for performance purposes). What I really like is the ease of articulation with the Bora.

In talking with Ivan (the G in G&W), he said the Churada is a specialty mouthpiece designed for high solo playing and would be great for S. Fantastique and Bydlo.

If you like playing high stuff then the Churada may be for you. I tried it and with my big mouth and full lips it was too small for me. It did have a very nice sound and really projected like crazy. If you use it, you will be heard! For me the Bora was a better fit for what I play.

I'll have my Bayamo and Bora with me for the State College, PA TubaChristmas on Dec. 11th if anybody wants to try them out.
